WHAT’S UP DOC From the desk of Dr. Laura Frost
HALTON EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES By Dr. Andrea Malatestinic
Background Veterinary Acupuncture is
a modality within Eastern or alternative medicine, more cor- rectly known as Traditional Chi- nese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). The Chinese were the earliest known veterinarians, thus it is no surprise that TCVM had its first basis in China over 4000 years ago. In today’s mod- ern medicine, we have the unique opportunity to make optimal use of both Western
(traditional veterinary medicine) and Eastern (TCVM) approach- es in caring for our animals. Although each approach views the world in a different way, both have the same goals of pro- moting health and preventing disease, and thus the integration of the two complement each other well. Acupuncture is based on
the flow of life force energy through a network like system of channels or pathways, known as meridians, which link all tis- sues and organs in the body.
It is centered on the princi-
ple of re-establishing flow and restoring balance within the body, thus allowing the animal to heal itself. Acupuncture was known to have been performed on horses almost as early as it had been on humans, with most points on the meridians trans- posed from human to horse. However, along the way, some special Classical points were also developed which were found to be unique only to the horse. Acupuncture directly stimulates neuromechanical

mechanisms and triggers the release of natural chemicals in the body, which both act to reduce pain and promote heal- ing.
How Can Acupuncture Benefit Your Horse? Acupuncture can be used
as a beneficial therapeutic addi- tion to help your equine friend live a happier, more successful and healthier life. Most com- monly used and especially suc- cessful in the treatment of mus- culoskeletal problems in the
equine athlete, it can also be employed as an adjunct to help stabilize and treat conditions and systemic problems such as: colic, laminitis, certain respira- tory conditions, infertility, aller- gies, immune system strength- ening, and even some behav- ioral issues, just to name a few. The great benefit of using Acupuncture in the equine ath- lete is that it can be used while showing in all disciplines and at all levels, since treatments do not interfere with exercise rou- tines nor have any concerns
with medication withdrawls, as do other therapies commonly used in performance horses. A typical Acupuncture
treatment will last 30 to 40 min- utes, depending on patient coop- eration of course! It should be noted, as is the case in humans, outcomes are very individual and can vary widely. So keep in mind even though a case may be suitable for acupuncture treat- ment, not all horses are as responsive as others to treat- ment, and not all horses may be receptive to needle placement.
New Classic Pleasure Driving Show
By Mary E. Baillie. In 2014 the Ontario Carriage
Driving Association is hosting a NEW CLASSIC PLEASURE DRIVING SHOW! This is a 2 day Carriage driving competition which will be held at the Iron Horse Equestrian Centre, at 5244 #1 Sideroad in Burlington Ontario on July 12 and 13, 2014. Judge Debbie Banfield from Kentucky and Phil Ferro from New York are officiating at what is hoped to be the premiere Pleasure Driving Show in Ontario. In addition to full divisions
for VSEs (very small equines), Ponies, Horses and Multiple
turnouts, there are also divisions for Juniors/Novice and for Utility vehicles. In addition, on Sunday morning there will be Dressage tests and cones classes held under Combined Driving Rules. Along with the driving com-
petition, we have attracted various vendors to set up booths with horse related products on display and for sale. Several breed groups like Ontario Friesian Association and the Ontario Percheron Associ- ation are coming to bring their horses and do demonstrations. There will also be representatives from horse rescue groups in atten- dance.
The show is in a beautiful
country setting in a massive Grand Prix ring in a natural amphitheatre. For those of you unfamiliar with Pleasure Driving Shows, competi- tors often drive restored antique carriages and dress elegantly with aprons and hats which makes for great photography or sketching opportunities. Food is available on the
grounds or you can bring your own picnic. Admissions and parking are
free and the hours are Saturday July 12-9AM to 5PM and Sunday the 13th of July-8AM to 4PM
