Getting Started in Reining – Beginner Levels

By Laura Henderson The ORHA entry level divisions make

getting started in reining easy with two tiers of classes. The first tier Green As Grass was covered in the May issue. The second tier know as Beginner and

is divided into two classes: Beginner and Advanced Beginner. This level designed as a “step up” from the Green As Grass level and allows riders to build confidence in their skills while exposing them to full NRHA patterns. Participants are not required to own their own horse and the horse does not need an NRHA Competition Licence to compete.

How it Work? The Beginner classes are open to non-

any reining competitions other than Green As Grass, NRHA Green Reiner, ORHA Youth, ORHA Funstyle or Men’s/Ladies classes. Riders may show in this class for a maximum of two years. The classes run con- currently and follow standard NRHA Pat- terns and Rules for legal bits and attire (long sleeve shirt, hat/helmet, boots, western sad- dle and western bridle). Riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet and youth can- not ride stallions, monorchid or cryptorchid horses, regardless of age of the horse. Beginner and Advanced Beginner classes run concurrently.

Graduating Up In the Beginner class, riders may show

professional riders who have never shown in one or two-handed and can show in this

class for a maximum of two years. In the Advanced Beginner class, riders

must ride one-handed and may compete in this class indefinitely as well as in any other ORHA class or NRHA Green Reiner the same year, except the Green As Grass, Green As Grass Youth, ORHA Youth or Beginner.

What memberships do I need? For Beginner and Advanced Beginner

classes an ORHA/ORHA Youth member- ship is required for both the rider and the owner of the horse. For more information on The ORHA

Beginner classes as well as our other entry level class please visit our website, www.orha.on.ca.
