ing how we are going to move all six body part in our horse all together. You may answer, very easy Russ; you have taught this to us already. We will start by asking our horse to go forward by using step # 1. You are absolutely correct my friends. My next ques- tion is how are we going to explain and teach our horse to move the front shoulders away from us and not to walk away from us and stand still. Again, you are correct if you answer, we are going to use step # 5

esting responses from them as they try to find the answers to my question. Why do you think that I ask them this question, instead of just giving them the answer? It is because I want them to use their brain, and learn how to communicate with the horse and open up them- selves and think about the keys to unlocking the door to horsemanship. I believe that this is the most impor- tant way to learn, by think- ing and using their own knowledge. I will try to navigate them to find the correct answers them- selves, because they will not always be my students, and they need to think for themselves about real life situations and my goal is for them to know how to survive without me and be able to apply my methods with many different horses and apply what they have learned with my Kozak Horsemanship so they will become strong, smart and educated horsemen. So let’s go back to the round pen and think together, how we will succeed in this step without tools. So, I will start by ask-

continue with our next Step # 18 Teach your horse to move different body parts with body pressure and will do this step without the use of a halter, a rope or stick in our hands. You my friends have already done so much great work with your horse and have com- pleted 17 steps of my Dis- cover “20 Steps in the Round Pen”. I have asked my students, many times to use their imaginations and think how the previous steps can help them to suc- ceed with their horse in Step # 18 and in teaching their horse to move body parts with their body cues and without the use of tools. I have many very inter-

We are now going to Welcome back to Russ

Ask your horse to turn out- side and also step # 3 Stop and face you. By using step # 5 Turn outside, your horse will step away from you and you and you will then immediately release the pressure, and then use step # 3 ask your horse to stop and face you. Now with your horse standing towards you use step # 4 Turn inside, and your horse will eventually learn to turn 360 degrees by using the hind quarters and without adding pressure on the horses face with a halter or by tapping the horse with our hands on his neck or shoulders and we also do not have to poke the horse’s rib cage or use the horsemanship stick in order for us to succeed in this step.

explain how our horse will move his shoulders and turn 360 degrees by using his hind quarters. We will start by standing beside our horse’s hind quarters and will begin by using step # 4 Turn inside once again. Your horse will naturally turn his head and look at you, as if to say what are you doing behind me. Eventually your horse will give you the correct answer, by turning and fac- ing towards you. Practice this step over and over and teach this step to your horse and each time that your horse turn and faces you will then step away from your horse’s hind quarters in a circle. Your horse will use his inside shoulder and start to turn 360 degrees by using his hindquarters, and be free. Again, you are not using

relaxed and accepts your cues, this is what I call great horsemanship! In another example, I will explain to you how to move your horses front shoulder and I will also explain how these steps will help if your horse does not want to come to you in the middle of the round pen or may hide beside the fence. We will again use step # 4 Turn Inside from the left and right direction and immediately release the pressure from both sides; you horse will step with the front shoulders left and right, and then without even realizing the horse is moving forward toward you and end up in the mid- dle of the round pen where you want the horse, this has all been done under your soft hands. Once again, I would call this great horse- manship. We are just using the most important tools, our brains, our hearts and understanding of the horse and our body language so that we can move our hors- es body parts with our body pressure. I will now continue to

Your horse is free,

your horse; it does not mat- ter in what direction either to the left or the right, you choose, with your horse still standing still and calm. You will start to walk around your horse making your circle smaller and smaller, eventually walking very close to your horse. Remember, that this is a new step for your horse and we will have to break these steps down into smaller steps so that your horse will understand us and will not become upset, we want our horse to learn and reach our goals in this step. When you start to walk very close to your horse, and your horse stands still and does not turn around, then you will stop facing towards the middle of your horse’s body between the shoul- ders and the hindquarters. Pet or rub your horse gen- tly with your hands and then walk away. Continue this last step until your horse is relaxed and his muscles are soft and relaxed. It is at this time, you

you, how do you think that we will move the hindquar- ters of our horse without the use of a stick, or flag or by tapping our horse in the hindquarters and without using physical pressure? Again, use your minds and think of ways that we can use our body cues and our body language in order for us to be successful in this step. I will help you and explain the steps. Start by inviting your horse to the middle of the round pen; your horse should stay there nice and calm. This is because you have already taught and accom- plished this step with your horse in the previous steps. Now, walk around

tools, and will have a good understanding between each other. Remember, it is important that you com- pletely finish step # 14 Desensitize the hind end, so that you will be safe from the hind quarters of your horse, when working in this step. My next question to

and do the same with the other side of his hind quar- ters, and the horse will move again from the pres- sure, taking a step moving his hind quarters. Eventu- ally, with practice you will be able to stand in a straight line behind your

er example of how you can move the hind quarters of your horse. In this exer- cise, we will use the horse’s tail. Again, it is important that you have finished the previous step in desensitizing the hind quarters to make sure that you are safe. We teach our horses to give to the pres- sure from the front in our round pen work in my Dis- cover “20 Steps in the Round Pen” by applying pressure with the lasso and the horse learns to become soft and gives to the pres- sure, so let’s also teach our horse to give to the pres- sure with his tail and also be soft in the hind quarters. I will start this step by standing beside the horse’s hind quarters and take the horses tail in my hand and will apply pressure from the side of the horses hips that I am on, taking him out of balance. The horse will step sideways and give to you his hind quarters. Step to the other side,

will ask your horse to move his hindquarters. Stand in the middle of your horses’ body between his shoulders and hind quarters and read your horse’s body language, he may not turn his head and look at you, but his inside ear closest to you will turn towards you and he will carefully listen to your body language. You will lean with your body from your hip to your shoulders towards your horse’s hips using your body pressure and your voice command. You will be surprised that your horse will step back or step away from you with his hindquarters. This may take time as you may need to practice this step, be consistent and be relaxed, and you will see results with your horse. I will also share anoth-

about how you can use the hind quarters and the shoulders together by teaching your horse to step away from you and to respect your space without tapping with a stick on his chest, nose or legs, and also not by shaking a rope under the horses jaw to make him respect your space. We will start by asking our horse to go for- ward, and when the horse is travelling in a soft and relaxed gait, we will ask our horse to stop parallel to

horse and when you apply pressure to the tail, your horse will start to walk backwards, and be soft and supple. You will be able to demonstrate to your friends, how you are able to lead your horse from his tail, both in the left and the right direction and control his hind quarters. They will think that in order to accomplish this would take months, but if you work at this, in just a few days, you can succeed, because you have completed my Dis- cover “20 Steps in the Round Pen” and have learned how to be safe with the horse. I will now talk to you

mastered this step in the round pen, I will practice this step in the middle of the round pen as well as other open areas. As I have mentioned previously, we do not need tools, we just need to use our body lan- guage to help our horse understand us and under- stand our horses, by work- ing through my Discover “20 Steps in the Round Pen”. You can use your imagination and create many different ideas and methods in how to commu- nicate and move your horse’s body parts without the use of tools. It is like the ocean; you should never reach the bottom, and run out of ideas. Each day, when I am working with

also use my hands by rais- ing them in the air in front of the horse and when the horse starts to lean back even a little bit, I will immediately release the pressure. Eventually, I will not need to use my hands, I will just lean my body for- ward, apply my voice com- mand, and with time and practice, my horse will step back around the whole round pen, backing up in a straight line. After my horse has

the fence or panel by using step # 5 Turn Outside, then let him stand still and be relaxed against this fence. When the horse is standing still and relaxed we will stand in front of our horse and apply our body pressure and our body language and then ask the horse to stay back. We will use the round pen walls for help so that the horse will keep his hind quarters in a straight line. I will lean forward in my body language showing to my horse to step away from me and using my voice command.

I will

Your horse will not be afraid of your hands and your body and you will also trust your horse when you are togeth- er. As you and your horse progress through my Dis- cover “20 Steps in the Round Pen” you will find that you will enjoy playing with each other, you will want to please one another, and enjoy the relationship that is building.
