60/ MAY 2014 THE RIDER REAL ESTATE: Small Town and Rural Lifestyle

the City of Cambridge it all changed. Traffic, lots of it... buses, hustle and bustle of people driving, walking and out working on their lawns, gardens and driveways. Lots of noise. Couldn’t hear the birds anymore. Had to put both hands on the wheel as the traffic was thick and fast. I overshot the drive-

cast day and dreary looking skies but by the time I headed out to show homes in our neighbouring communi- ties of Cambridge and Kitchener the sun had broken through the clouds and the day was warming up. I took some back roads to reach my first destina- tion. Cheese Factory Rd. is a peaceful, twisting road with very little residential development. It takes you up and down small hills and ravines with views of rolling green grass, old homesteads and tree canopies over the gravel road. I find these drives revive the soul and make you feel capable of achieving anything! As soon as I hit the City Limits of

Yesterday I woke up to an over-

ranch with a narrow frontage and small two car long drive. I could hear some- one banging on a steel pipe somewhere as I got out of the car, I heard lawn- mowers, kids shouting and the

way of the first home I was planning to show and had no opportunity to turn into a driveway ahead as the cars behind me were impatiently pushing me along. Finally saw an extra wide drive with no oncoming traffic so pulled into the spot quickly as the man behind me honked impatiently because I’d touched the brake before turning. Whew! Then I wait- ed, waited and waited until there was an opportunity to back out and go back to the home I was showing. It was a long brick

more hectic and I had to make sure and get into my turn lanes long before I needed to make a turn. No breaks in traffic, big box stores, restaurants, car lots, people, people... cars everywhere. The two homes I showed next were ones which overlooked the #401 in the distance. At one of the properties we stepped out onto the back deck and tried to hear what the neighbour in the next yard was saying or shouting to us. He seemed friendly, a big smile and dramatic arm gestures but we honestly

onslaught of perpetual car noise and fumes on the busy road out front. I missed my quiet country roads and small town quiet traffic. The back of the home looked out over the Speed River and it was a lovely view. But the neighbours homes crowed in on each side and there was no privacy any- where. Going into Kitchener was even

up North and I think they were, like me, a little shell shocked by how much different lives the people in these big cities live compared to we who enjoy small town and rural lifestyle. I think we all take our lives for granted and lose sight of how many more irritants there are associated with living in big cities.

mute to shows, shopping, good schools and communities that are based on our same fundamental values, living in the smaller town and rural areas is becom- ing more desirable. Farmland is at an all time high for value and I can see it becoming more

As long as there is an easy com-

couldn’t hear a word he was saying over the hum of the #401. My buyers are a couple from way

valuable as time progresses. It’s already become very difficult to find any large parcels of good arable farm- lands and rural small towns are experi- encing rapid growth in all areas. More and more people are retiring to the smaller communities and looking for relief from high taxes and congested lifestyle.
