Getting Started in Reining – Green As Grass

By Laura Henderson The ORHA entry level divi-

sions make getting started in rein- ing surprisingly easy. The first entry-level tier is Green As Grass, which is divided into three classes: Green As Grass, Green As Grass Youth and Green As Grass Non- Member. This tier is designed to allow riders the opportunity to compete against others with similar skill levels, while gaining experi- ence and having fun. Participants are not required to own their own horse and the horse does not need an NRHA Competition Licence to compete.

How Does it Work? The Green As Grass classes

are open to non-professional riders who have not shown in any reining competitions other than saddle

club, Green As Grass classes, ORHA Funstyle or ORHA Begin- ner. The classes run concurrently and follow standard NRHA Rules for legal bits and attire (long sleeve shirt, hat/helmet, boots, western saddle and western bridle). The rider can choose to ride with one or two hands and the patterns are modified ORHA Patterns # 90-93, which can be

found at

www.orha.on.ca. Riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet and youth cannot ride stallions, monorchid or cryptorchid horses, regardless of age of the horse.

Graduating Up Green As Grass - riders may show in this class until the end of the year in which 30 points have been accumulated. Points are calculated as 5 points for 1st place, 4 points for 2nd place, 3 points for 3rd

place, 2 points for 4th place and 1 point for 5th place. Green As Grass Youth – riders must be 16 or under as at January 1 that year and can show in this class for a maximum of two years. Green As Grass Non-Member – riders may compete in this class for 1 calendar year.

What memberships do I need? For the Green As Grass and

Green As Grass Youth classes an ORHA/ORHA Youth membership is required for both the rider and the owner of the horse. ORHA membership is not

required for the horse owner or the rider for the Green As Grass Non- Member class. For more information on our

entry level class please visit our website, www.orha.on.ca.

New Rules For ORHA Entry Level Reining In response to requests from

reiners and coaches to allow entry level riders the opportunity to show in additional classes, the ORHA Board has implemented changes to the rules for 2014 Entry Level rein- ing classes (Green As Grass, Green As Grass Youth, or Beginner). These new rules will apply for 2014 onwards, however if you have shown in Green As Grass, Green As Grass Youth, or Begin- ner, for two calendar years as of

January 1, 2014, you are still not eligible to show in these classes for 2014.

GREEN AS GRASS - Previously, Green As Grass reiners could only show in this class for a maximum of two years. Showing in any other class other than NRHA Green Reiner would jeopardize their Green as Grass eligibility. With the NEW RULES riders may show in this class until the end of

the year in which 30 points have been accumulated. Points are cal- culated as 5 points for 1st place, 4 points for 2nd place, 3 points for 3rd place, 2 points for 4th place and 1 point for 5th place. Riders competing in this class may com- pete in Beginner, NRHA Green Reiner, ORHA Youth and/or Fun- style, without jeopardizing their Green as Grass eligibility.

GREEN AS GRASS YOUTH – ORHyA Winners

Previously, Green As Grass Youth rein- ers has to be 16 or under as at January 1 that year and could show in this class for a maximum of two years. Showing in any other class other than NRHA Green Reiner would jeopardize their Green as Grass Youth eligibility. With the NEW RULES Green As Grass Youth reiners must be 16 or under as at January 1 that year and can show in this class for a maximum of two years. Rid- ers competing in this class may com- pete in Beginner, NRHA Green Reiner, ORHA Youth and/or Funstyle, without jeopardizing their Green as Grass Youth eligibility.

BEGINNER - Previously, Beginner reiners may only have shown in Green as Grass, Beginner or NRHA Green Reiner in prior years and could show in this class for a maximum of two years.

Showing in any other class other than NRHA Green Reiner would jeopardize their Beginner eligibility. With the NEW RULES Beginner

reiners may only have shown in Green as Grass, Beginner or NRHA Green Reiner in prior years and can show in this class for a maximum of two years. Riders competing in this class may compete in Beginner, NRHA Green Reiner, ORHA Youth, Funstyle and/or Men’s/Ladies, without jeopardizing their Beginner eligibility. For more details and a complete

copy of the rules, please refer to the 2014 ORHA Rule Book. Rule Books are available online at www.orha.on.ca and in the show offices. If you have any questions about classes, showing or your eligibility please contact John Pur- die, Joanne Milton or email direc- tors@orha.on.ca
