More strays put to sleep Walk on wild west side
THE number of stray dogs having to be put to sleep has almost tripled in Tonbridge and Malling during the last four years. Dog wardens have blamed the
rise on the increase in aggressive animals which has been experi- enced across the country. According to the borough coun-
cil, 21 stray dogs had to be de- stroyed during the year ending March 2014, compared to eight in 2010, with the figure rising to 12 the following year and 14 in 2012/13. However, there was a significant
drop in the overall number of stray dogs dealt with by the service from 309 four years ago to 190 in 2013/14. Robert Styles, Tonbridge and
34 Malling June 2014
Malling Council director of street scene and leisure said: “We will only put to sleep dogs which are too aggressive to be rehomed or those too ill for treatment. The rise in ‘put to sleep’ dogs reflects the na- tional increase in aggressive dogs found as strays or handed over as ‘strays’ by their owners.” The dog warden service, cur-
rently run by Ward Security Ltd, who took over from Animal War- dens in March, handled 81 reports of dangerous dogs in 2013/14, a rise of nine on the previous year and 35 more than in 2011/12. It also dealt with 115 reports of noisy dogs dur- ing the last year and 85 of dog foul- ing.
