Town Talk Community work rewarded

TWO residents in Snodland have been presented with certificates to recognise the significant contribu- tions they have made to their community. The Kent Association of Local Councils (KALC) and town coun- cil awards were made to Alison Tompsett and Ray Cocks by Anne Moloney, chairman of Snodland Town Council, at the annual town meeting. The KALC scheme was launched last year and this is the first year awards have been given. Town and parish councils can have their own certificates and members of the public can nomi- nate people they think merit an honour. Paul Hickmott told the meeting

that Ray, of Ashbee Close, (who received the KALC award) would not be recognised because he dressed as Father Christmas every Christmas Eve going round the town on his sleigh delivering

Chair re-elected ANNE Moloney has been re- elected chairman of Snodland Town Council at the council's an- nual meeting. Peter Misy was re- elected vice-chairman. There is no change in chairmen

of the committees: amenities and recreation (Dave Keeley), plan- ning and environment (David Purll), policy and resources (Deb- bie Alford-Smith).

THE third Snodland Town Football Club's five-a-side tournament at Potyns Sports Ground on the weekend of June 21 and 22 has seen a record number of entries. “We have over 130 teams com-

ful for the award and thanked his wife Sylvia; Peter Wilson, Snod- land Town FC treasurer, who has helped every year and the club’s Dave Jeal. Alison received the council award. Anne said she had done

so much over the years, including running the Sunday school at Christ Church. She organised the shoe box appeal for 12 years and raises funds for the Dog AID char- ity.

and I would like to thank the coun- cil but everything I have done is because I have enjoyed doing it.”

Shop finds bigger premises Chess success

SIMONE Morris’s boutique in Hol- borough Road, Snodland has moved into the Blythswood Care charity shop in the High Street. In December’s Town Talk we re- ported she had opened "Simique" in the old A’n’D Bargain Food Store after selling clothes online. “It was too small,” she said.

“This shop is bigger and better and is more central.” Simone has been joined by her mother Tina, who was manager of the charity shop, and Sandra Everett. The shop is open longer and now sells men’s and ladies’ clothes. We reported in the last issue

that the charity shop, opened in 2006, would close on April 17. Tina said: “It was a nice little

unit. A lot of people who worked here went on to get paid employ-

ment and we gave work experi- ence to pupils from schools. “We couldn’t understand why it closed but I would like to say a big thank you from all the staff to everybody who supported us over the years. Many customers said how sad it was.” Manns, the shop's cat, is still

there.

SNODLAND Chess Club beat Lewisham CC to win the Tom Fuller Cup at the Mick Jagger Centre in Dartford. Seven different cup finals

took place on the day, with 88 players taking part. Rob Thompson, club chair-

man and Tom Fuller, captain, said: “Lewisham had a very strong team, slightly stronger than ours, and it was a closely fought contest.” The result was 2-2 but Snod-

land won on “board count”. The other players were David Fowler, Peter Hickey and Will Patch. The club meets in the cricket pavilion on Thursday evenings. Its website is snodlandchess- club.com.
