in Winnipeg and are to be treasured for what they tell us of that time. Mayberry two years ago obtained a painting by Group of Seven founding member Frank Johnston, which was purchased by a Winnipeg client for $140,000. Te gallery also holds a wide selection of works by esteemed print- maker Walter J. Phillips, “a really cool artist,” who came from England and lived in Winnipeg from 1913 to 1940. Prices for a Phillips print can be in the $40,000 to $60,000 range. As Shaun explains, “He was a major print maker.” Other Phillips prints may go for as little as $500 or $600. Phillips work mainly focussed on the West, from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains, and includes paintings as well as original co- lour woodblock prints. Gallery owners have varying thoughts

Winnipeg to look for early Canadian art. For example, Shaun says, someone coming to Winnipeg would have an

opportunity to see some “really unique” Canadian art, displaying the early pio- neer days of this area. Such works were painted by people stationed temporarily
on the number of galleries operating in Winnipeg. Shaun names some eight or 10 commercial galleries but all admit that commercial galleries are too few in number for the level of art output in this town and the quietly held treasures still in personal possession.
