The Gravity premiere during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival at Princess of Wales Theatre on Sept 8, 2013. Eight awards are presented during the Festival, but

according to Handling, “One of the most important awards at our Festival is our People’s Choice award, voted for by our audience. Many of these winning films have gone on to win a Best Picture Oscar.” Past People’s Choice award winners, such as Slumdog Mil- lionaire, Precious and Te King’s Speech, left the Oscars with multiple awards. “It is because of our placement on the cal- endar that many films choose to launch their award season campaigns at our Festival,” Handling explains. Te once modest film festival has become an organization

dedicated to bringing the film industry’s best to film lovers every day of the year through various media including lec- tures, screenings and workshops. TIFF’s vision is to lead the world in creative and cultural discovery through the moving image. “During the Festival our TIFF Industry team pro- grams a full conference of panels, speakers and workshops. It’s an opportunity to make connections, to learn from one another and to keep up on industry trends,” says Handling.

The Hub “For our audience, the Festival represents the opportu-

nity to experience and interact with a major film before it hits cinemas, while also screening an independent film from the far reaches of the world – a film that may not ever make it to Toronto cinemas,” he adds. “Te beauty of the Festival and its many film programs is that audi- ences can customize their experience and create their own festival, whether that means red carpet premieres, independent cinema, Canadian cinema, documentaries, experimental film… I could go on! Audiences also have the unique opportunity to hear from the filmmakers who introduce their films and participate in candid post- screening Q&As.” Tis year, audiences can expect a new program of

international short films, Short Cuts International, which will kick off a monthly year-round shorts program. Te 2014 City to City program will focus on films from Seoul, South Korea. Share in the excitement Sept. 4 to 14 as the 39th annual Toronto International Film Festival kicks off.
