ravelling Winnipeggers have long felt that there’s a natural affinity between their home city and the vast, often handsome and forever exhilarating metropolis stretched out along the west shore of Lake Michigan. Teir instincts are right on. Te more one learns about


Chicago’s 200-year history and the more one investigates that city’s down- town core, its transportation links, its commerce activity, the more one finds parallels between these two important centre-continent cities. Most Winnipeggers were convinced a century and more ago that their


tiny community was destined for great things. It would be a busy and wealthy “Chicago of the North”, and Winnipeg’s business leaders signaled as much when they incorporated it in 1873. A humble title like “village” or “town” was out of the question. Tis would be the “city” of Winnipeg. Te population then was 1,500.
