Responsibility

Levels of responsibility vary greatly across different roles so you need to be able to identify what is worth talking about in an interview. If you work in a café and take payment from people, that’s a responsibility for the company’s money. If you work at a summer camp you are responsible for the safety of children in your care. If you work in a call centre you are responsible for ensuring the customer’s query is handled professionally to maintain the reputation of the company. As long

as you can discuss your responsibilities using examples and the impact your personal contribution made, you will be sure to impress.

Teamwork/Independence Many companies in industries such as festivals or events will hire a huge batch of temporary workers for the busy summer period, and have them start at the same time. They’ll be trained together and given tasks throughout their contract that will require them to work independently at different times. If you choose to work

for this kind of company, take the opportunities you are given to show you are equally as comfortable working by yourself or as part of a team, and volunteer to lead tasks whenever the chance arises. It will show your manager you are up for a challenge and you may get promoted!

If you look at your summer job as a great way to gain some real working experience, and grab every opportunity you get to try different tasks you’ll enjoy it so much more, and really that’s what matters most!
