THE FUTURE FACE OF BUSINESS Louise McCathie (Birmingham Children’s Hospital): Has gained a wide range of experience during 12 years in the charity sector and is planning the largest multi-million pound fund-raising appeal outside London to fund a new state-of-the-art children’s hospital in the next 10 years. Commended: Alison Mennell (Norton & Stafford Bathrooms): Entered the family business in Cannock as managing director after working as a general nurse in 2011. Has introduced many measures to improve the business performance, including a brand make-over and development of a marketing strategy.

EXCELLENCE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Grayson Thermal Systems: Products include engine cooling, heating and air conditioning systems with a strong reputation for quality, innovation and partnership working. Tyseley, Birmingham, firm has committed itself to developing international business opportunities and areas of operation include Europe and New Zealand. Commended: emc europe: A leader in mobile phone and laptop recycling for corporate organisations throughout Europe. Its work is aimed at expanding the life span of electronic equipment through recovery and reuse, replicating its UK work throughout 100,000 European customers. It is based in Burton.

“There are many fabulous businesses but the business I have chosen to give my award to probably won’t be much of a surprise,” said Tim Pile as he presented the President’s award to Jaguar Land Rover. He said: “This company represents everything I hold dear. JLR invests in R&D, innovation and design. Jaguar Land Rover has headed the sales drive that has made the West Midlands the only English region with a trade surplus with China, accounting for annual sales worth over £1 billion (pounds). In fact, Jaguar Land Rover is one of the UK’s
largest exporters and generates about 85 per cent of its revenue from global sales.”
Alan Volkaerts, operations director at the Solihull plant and his equivalent, Nicolas Guibert at the Castle Bromwich plant received the award. Alan said: “JaguarLandRover is
indebted to the whole of the West Midlands. We are very proud to be standing here, not just because we are doing well but because we have had to fight to ensure our share of the market and our industry sector.”
