Network in style at Hoar Cross Hall
Business women from across the region are invited to the second in a series of Burton & District Chamber of Commerce ‘Women in Business’ events in July. The event – at the luxurious Hoar Cross Hall
Spa Hotel – will take place on 3 July, and follows the successful launch event in March which attracted 60 people. The business networking event will take place
outdoors, on the hotel terrace, and will feature an English garden party lunch theme. More than half a million businesswomen
contribute an estimated £50billion to the UK economy and this event is an opportunity for business women to gather new business contacts, whilst sharing and learning from the experience of others. Carol Sewell, of Burton & District Chamber, said: “We were delighted with the response to our first event in March and have taken on board the invaluable feedback received from the delegates. The first event completely sold out so we will be offering 100 places this time. “For the second event we wanted to make
sure the ladies got more time to network and begin building those key relationships to grow their businesses. To kick start the summer holiday season we will offer traditional English summer garden party fare in the wonderful Hoar Cross Hall garden terrace.”

here’s no excuse for Branston Golf and Country Club not being a cut above the rest – certainly not with more than £50,000 of
new golf course machinery to play with. The club, which is near Burton, has taken delivery of
‘Our new hand mowers create a fantastic clean cut of the grass’
various new pieces of kit, including three hand mowers, a turf iron and two tipper trucks with trailers, all of which will be used to keep the greens at the club in tip top condition. Branston’s course manager Gavin Robson said: “Our new hand mowers, fitted with turf
conditioners, create a fantastic clean cut of the grass to 3.5 mm giving a smoother playing surface with better contouring and subtle movements to our greens.” After hand cutting, Branston Club’s greens are fine-tuned (made truer and faster) by a specialist
Turf Iron, a technique that’s new to the club, which literally irons out the wrinkles caused by mowing. Branston managing director Ben Laing said: “Since Gavin’s arrival in February our golfing members
have already commented on improvements in the presentation and condition of our splendid courses and we’re pleased to invest in new machinery so that his talents can be used to full advantage.”
Fun on the farm for charity
This year the annual Agri-lympics team charity event at the National Forest Adventure Farm, Burton, is supporting two charities, The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust (DLCHT) and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI). The charities and the Adventure Farm are appealing for teams to take part in the fun-filled event on 14 June 2014. The competition will see teams of eight (four men and four women) take on farm-themed events including the tractor pull, hay bale heft, round bale roll, eating competition and tug-of-war. The overall winner gets to take home the ‘Golden Welly’ trophy. National Forest Adventure Farm director Tom
Robinson said: “The DLCHT does wonderful work in Staffordshire and RABI’s assistance is very much in demand following the terrible floods in areas of the country at the beginning of the year. I hope that this year’s Agri-lympics will be a fun experience for everyone taking part and a great way to raise money for these amazing charities.” DLCHT fundraiser Natalie Wood said: “As a charity we rely on the generosity of the local community to help raise the £2.5million needed each year to provide our services. This opportunity gives us the chance to not only raise vital funds for the Hospice but also to help raise our profile in Burton on Trent and East Staffordshire.” RABI regional manager Kate Jones said: “This is a great way to show that farming can be fun and at the same time raise funds to help members of the farming community in financial need. We really hope people will support the event by entering a team to be in with a chance of winning the much- coveted Golden Welly trophy. ”

Member and mate step out
A Chamber member and a pal are to walk from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for St Giles Hospice, Whittington, near Lichfield. Tim West of carpet cleaning firm Stainbusters and his friend Paul Ainger, are taking up the 1,000 mile challenge and are hoping to raise £20,000, enough to fund a St Giles nurse for a year. The two friends are hoping that local
businesses will help their worthy cause by joining in on the walk and helping to raise sponsorship. Tim said: “I really wanted to do something positive and helpful whilst I'm still young enough, so what better way than to walk the length of your country of birth with your best mate to raise money for a really deserving, local charity. It will be hard work, walking on average 20 miles a day, but the rewards will last my lifetime. “We just want people to, not only donate
money in sponsorship, but also, if they can, come and walk with us; whether it’s for five yards or 50 miles, it is up to them to gain sponsorship themselves and be part of something bigger.”
