New look and focus for Flybe
Prepare for tunnel closures B
irmingham’s notorious city centre tunnels will once again be closed this summer. The closure – from 18 July to
1 September – is for the second phase of the works to upgrade the ageing tunnels. This phase will include renewing the ventilation
system, installing new security and communications systems, replacing electrical systems and refurbishing pumping stations and plant rooms. This year’s closures will be preceded by two weeks
of overnight closures, from 10pm to 6am, and followed by up to four weeks of similar overnight closures. The firm carrying out the work, Amey, is liaising with
business representatives and organisations from across the city to get feedback on last year’s closures and ensure that any disruption is minimised.
Steve Ashley, business director at Amey, said: “The
works that we are carrying out in the tunnels this year will not only complete the upgrade to comply with modern European standards but will also see us installing technology that will assist with the management of the tunnels in the future. We are working with public transport operators and business communities in Birmingham to ensure we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption.” Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: “The success of the closures last year was down to the people of Birmingham taking on board the advice and planning in advance how they would travel. We are urging people to make a note of these dates and consider what travel choices they can make while these essential works are completed.”
Regional airline Flybe has undergone a rebranding project, which has included giving its fleet a purple livery. As well as the new paintjob, Flybe has introduced a new-look website and a ‘time guarantee’ scheme which will see passengers receive a money-off voucher if they encounter flight delays. Under the scheme, if a flight is
more than an hour late at its destination, due to an issue which is within Flybe’s control, then passengers will be offered a £60 voucher towards their next flight. Flybe chief commercial officer
Paul Simmons said: “As an airline we are dedicated to continuously looking at ways to improve as a business. Our brand refresh is a significant step forward for us as we move to become the UK’s local airline of choice with a focus on time-saving and punctual travel.”
