DART NOTES BOMVC celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this year.

Back in 1954, a group of twelve young men got together to form a choir. Little did they know that all these years later the choir would still be as strong as ever. With a membership of thirty-five regular members, the choir meet for rehearsal once a week in Brixham. Whilst the average age of the choir is over seventy, the comradeship and bond between members enables the choir to con- tinue to flourish. As with every choir, members come from very varied backgrounds. Age is no barrier and with one or two members now in their early 90s. Drawing members from Torbay, Dartmouth and beyond, under the direction of their Musical Director, Ron Burrington, the choir will be singing both home and away this year. Singing from a wide repertoire the choir enjoy many pieces well known to male voice choirs from sacred to traditional, from songs of the sea to popular tunes. At

their annual concert in July the choir enjoy presenting these pieces as well as singing many old favourites. This takes place in All Saints Church, Brixham, famous for its connec- tion to its first Vicar, Sir Henry Francis Lyte who wrote the well-known hymn ‘Abide with me’. So why not go along and see for yourself. They practice every Thursday evening between 7.30 and 9.30pm in the Christian Community Centre, Fore Street, Brixham and all are welcome. For further information please check out their website http://www.brixham-orpheus-choir.org or contact the Choir Secretary, Alec Pine (Tel: 01803 856655).

Would you like to get out and about more, but have difficulty in access- ing public transport? Then Totnes and Dartmouth Ring and Ride may be just the ticket! Established for over 20 years, they are a local, community transport charity providing services for frail elderly and disabled passengers as well as those who feel ‘socially ex- cluded’ by virtue of their location. Their vehicles are specifically designed to be wheelchair friendly and are equipped with tail-lifts and additional features for easy access. Their Dartmouth-based service

which picks up from Dartmouth and surrounding parishes transports passengers to Totnes, Dartmouth and Newton Abbot on a regular basis and allows users to go shopping and socialise with their peers. In addition, we also arrange special trips further afield during school holiday periods. If this this sounds like a service

that you or somebody you know would be interested in, then they would be delighted to hear from you.
