D”MOUTH PRE-SCHOOL What we do

Every child that attends a preschool in this country will follow the National Early Years Foundation Stage syllabus. But not every child will have the experience that Dartmouth Preschool can offer.

We have a strong belief that learning by doing is the natural and most effective way in which children can absorb the world around them and develop their social, physical and early academic skills in a safe and stimulating environment.

We really get to know our young charges very well and build strong relationships between home and school. This provides us, in turn, with the information we require to develop learning strategies to meet the needs of each individual child. We provide extra support and help to both children and families where it is needed. We have a strong track record of catering for children with Special Educational Needs and those with English as an additional language.

How we do it Daily activities are set around the term’s topics and our zoned learning areas. Each zone

and activities are carefully designed to make the best use of the time that the children have at school and to spark their interest and ignite their imagination.

This term’s topic is GROWING and ON THE FARM. So in the role play area they could dress up as vets and make the animals better, they could use trucks, tractors and dumpers in the small world or messy play zone and they could look at pictures and books of farms and sing a bar or two of Old Macdonald in the Literacy zone.

We have a generous ratios of adults to children over and above the prescribed guidelines so that the children are nurtured and their interests fully catered for.

progress in their learning and are confident enough to allow children genuine opportunities to direct the course of the session . . . . in interesting directions on their own initiative”

We are so lucky to have a completely enclosed, flat, child-friendly secret garden all to ourselves where children are given many different opportunities to play and explore. £10,000 of Lottery money was spent designing this garden specifically for under 5s.
