AROUND KINGSWEAR

to avoid being caught. The Brunels, i.e. Marc Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom managed to change the face of Britain as much as any other engineers, providing the technical advances to make this the richest country in the world for quite some time. Railways, bridges, tunnels, marvellous machines, ships, buildings, docks – all came under their close scrutiny, all were improved beyond measure. What an inheritance! Even their occasional failures were heroic!

BITS FALLING OFF As I write Kingswear appears to be crumbling - bits are falling

off, some of them into the water. Beacon Road has suffered another collapse and part of the creek footpath up against Brixham Road is no more. Presumably these unfortunate happenings are the result of the tempests and floods of February. To mis-quote William McGonegal, “February 2014

will be remembered for a very long time.” We can only hope that all the King’s horses and all the King’s men will come along to put Kingswear together again! Sorry.

WI IN THE DOG HOUSE Kingswear WI had some very special visitors at their recent

meeting. Donna and Dexter, two gorgeous black Labrador puppies came with their Canine Partner volunteer puppy walkers. Although only 4 months old, both puppies were already responding enthusiastically to their training and were happy to be put through their paces for a delighted audience. Canine Partners is a charity set up to provide assistance dogs to enable severely disabled people to experience a more normal independent lifestyle. These brilliant dogs are able to help their owners dress and undress, get into bed, go shopping and experience a social life without the constant need for human carers. Some dogs have even saved their owners lives by accessing help if their owner is in distress. Some dogs can even put a bank card into an ATM though they do struggle with pin numbers. Kingswear WI is helping with fundraising by collecting used postage stamps and some members chose to sponsor a puppy.
