DAYMARK 150 CELEBRATIONS

The Daymark, the iconic marker at the mouth of the river Dart, turns 150 this year – and we are making preparations for a year of celebrations.

Welcome to this month’s Dart Habour bulletin in By

the Dart. Rob Giles, Harbourmaster

SAFETY ON THE RIVER The river has seen two serious fires

since our last column in By the Dart. We worked with the emergency

services and the Lower Ferry on both incidents and prevented either from becoming major incidents – I would like to pay tribute to everyone involved for such sterling work. Both, thankfully, did not result in serious injury or death, but do serve as a reminder to all boat owners on the river to check their vessel for safety. There are a number of ways you

can get your vessel checked out – by contacting the RNLI or the Boat Safety Scheme via their website on www. boatsafetyscheme.com. They will make sure every aspect of your vessel is checked to the highest standards. However, it needs to be remembered

that accidents can still happen even when you have the correct checks in place. If you spend a lot of time aboard, or live aboard, take some time to re-familiarise yourself with your emergency procedures, safety equipment and ways off the vessel in case of any emergency.

DARTMOUTH PULLS TOGETHER TO SUPPORT CRUISE VISITS

Dart Harbour is now working with a number of other town agencies to promote us as a cruise destination. Dart Harbour, Dartmouth Town Council, Dartmouth Business Improvement District, Dartmouth Tourist Information centre and advisor Tricia Daniels have met a number of times over the last months to find ways of working together that can boost the chance of more cruise vessels visiting. As a group we have targeted a number of activities that we think will help – part of which is the welcome the town gives to each visiting ship. The next visit to Dartmouth is on Friday May 30th

from the vessel

Serenissima – and we hope the town will come together to greet the vessel when it sails into harbour at 7am. The Dartmouth BID have already

started looking at ways to promote the port as a cruise destination as part of its plan for marketing Dartmouth and the TIC have begun to

I am delighted to welcome the beautiful 1895 Brixham built gaff- rigged sailing trawler Pilgim to a berth in the Dart this summer. She has just started life as a working boat following a loving restoration project over the last four years. Pilgrim will occupy the berth previously occupied by Res Nova in the middle of the river for the summer and I’m sure you’ll agree that this stunning vessel will be a great addition to our lovely harbour.

GET IN TOUCH

We want to make sure we are providing the best possible service to all river users – and we can only do that if we keep in touch with them, their needs and their hopes for the river.

If you would like to get in touch please give us a call on 01803 832337, email Info@dartharbour.org or follow us on twitter @DartHarbour.

work with us to produce information leaflets aimed at Cruise passengers and are going to be on hand to help cruise passengers with any queries about the town on visiting days. We all have a common goal of attracting more cruise ships to Dartmouth and we are all determined to achieve that together.
