KARRENAmey (50), who has died in Northamptonshire, lived locally until 1996. Born KarrenWright, she aended Senacre School, where she met her husband of 28 years, Martin. Karren had lived in Suon Valence and Senacre, her homes with Martin included Shipley Court,Wya Street and Penenden Heath.
Karren’s jobs in the area includedwork
at the Leonard Cheshire Home in Mote Park and cleaning at Maidstone Hospital and Penenden Heath School. Shewas mother to Sian and Leigh. The family moved in 1996 when Martin’s
job in HGV fiing took them to Northamptonshire. Karren worked in learning support in schools in Northampton. Martin Amey said: “Karren and I did
everything together, her familywas her life. Shewas first diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago and managed to overcome that, going back to loving life and always having fun. Shewas outgoing and lively, andwas a loving grandmother to her three grandchildren.” Karren leaves her husband, children and grandchildren Ryan, Callum and Lewis.
Albert Till
ALBERT Till (99) lived in Laddingford for 65 years. One of 13 children, he grew up in Yalding and stayed in the area during the war because of hiswork as a baker and auxiliary fireman. He aended fires caused by German bombing; including the aermath of a number of doodlebug aacks, aswell as plane crashes involving aircra from both sides of the conflict. Hewas courting Joan,
whom he later married, during thewar when the couple had to take cover as a doodlebug crashed nearby. Albert went on towork for Atcost Buildings in PaddockWood and spent much of his career as a hop sampler in PaddockWood. He and Joan raised sons Mike and Gordon. Mike Till said: “My dad’s real passion
was gardening, and that led him and my mother to stay in Laddingford. Hewould never havewanted to move and leave the garden he loved. He grew food for the family and had his garden looking immaculate. “He remained a loving and kind family
man, strong physically and mentally. He and my motherwere evacuated from their home on Christmas Day because of the local floods.” Albert, the last survivor of the family of
13, leaves his wife, sons, four grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.
Joan Harris
JOAN Harris (90) lived inWillington Street, Maidstone, for 53 years. Her previous homes include a flat above a hairdressing salon in Knightrider Street, and Bower Street, where shewas born as Joan Holding. Educated locally, Joan’s various jobs includedwork at Alabaster Passmore and Sons print works in Tovil, where shewas mother of the chapel, and otherwork in the printing industry. Joan alsoworked at Trebor Sharps and had a number of cleaning jobs. Joan’s first marriage produced son John
and daughter Sally Anne, and with her husband of 50 years, engineering worker Colin Harris, she had son Kevin and daughter Diane. Kevin said: “My motherwas gregarious
and strong, a very spirited person.” Joan enjoyed spending time at

PETERWard (68), of Madginford, Bearsted, le £500 in his will for his fellow members of Maidstone’s Prostate Cancer Support Group to go out and enjoy a lunch on him. Originally trained as an electrician, Peter
alsoworked as a photographer and eventually taught photography at Mid Kent College. Hewas married but had no children. Peter Spearink, who knew PeterWard through the support group, said: “Peter had a really tough time but hewas a stoic person. He bore his illness with dignity and he did verywell, surviving 11 years aer a late diagnosis. The giwas a really kind gesture to the rest of us.”

John Atherton
JOHN Harding Atherton (77), who died in Honiton, Devon,waswell known in the local area from 18 years in responsible roles within the education department of KCC. He served as area education officer from
1986, andwas promoted to become director of education for Mid Kent, a post from which he retired in 1993. Born in Devonport, Plymouth, he grew up in that area and was exempted from national service on medical grounds. He read English at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and later qualified as a teacher.
Heworked as a teacher in Hastings and Nairobi, Kenya, before taking roles in educational administration in Essex and Sussex prior to his move to the local area. John lived south of Maidstone with his wife Angela before moving on his own to Chart Suon. He seled in the village with partner Ann Kesteven. Ann said: “Johnwas a very private man
whowas good at geing away from the pressures of hiswork, oen by geing away from Kent atweekends. “Hewas an accomplished musician who
played violin, piano and lute. He rejoined the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra aer we moved to the west country in the mid- 1990s, having previously been in that orchestra as a youngster. Johnwas very principled, a devoted vegan, a keen birdwatcher and an avid collector of books.” John leaves his partner, Ann.
