Maidstone Borough Local Plan Consultation 2014 Have your say today!


The local plan will set the rules for how Maidstone borough develops until 2031 and the council wants local people to help produce Maidstone’s plan.


The plan must reflect local people’s views of how they wish their community to develop, so the council urges everyone with an interest in their area to look at and comment on the draft plan.


The draft plan is based on the objectively assessed needs of the local area and sets out opportunities for development and clear policies on what will or won’t be


permitted and where. It plans positively for the development and infrastructure required in the area and has a clear strategy for enhancing the natural, built and historic environment.


It will deliver the homes, jobs and transport infrastructure needed for our growing population, while still protecting our local landscapes.


It will enable the council to protect important countryside from unsuitable housing and co-ordinate the infrastructure that new housing needs to fit in.

The documents are also available for inspection at Maidstone Gateway, King Street, Maidstone, Kent ME15 6JQ.


The offices are open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5:30pm, and Saturday 9am to 1pm. In addition, copies of the documents will be available at all libraries in Maidstone Borough. Improving Maidstone’s infrastructure


Future development in Maidstone will be supported by infrastructure improvements, such as new or safer road schemes, additional school places, park improvements and new health centres, paid for by developers.


Maidstone Borough Council has prepared a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) charging schedule. The levy


is a mandatory charge applied across the borough on all new housing and out of town retail developments to pay for vital infrastructure.


The CIL, a separate document to the local plan, is also out for public comments until 7 May 2014 and can be viewed on the council’s website www.maidstone.gov.uk/localplan.

The next steps The council will consider all comments


made on the draft plan and publish an amended plan for public comment in winter 2014, before submitting the plan to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in spring 2015. An inspector appointed by the Secretary of State will then conduct an ‘Independent Examination’, perhaps in summer 2015 before the plan is adopted later that year.
