School told to improve

A REPORT by a government in- spector has described teaching at Staplehurst School as inadequate. In its latest Ofsted report, the school, in Gybbon Rise, has been told that both teaching and man- agement require improvement. The report goes on to say that

while behaviour and the safety of pupils is good, the effectiveness of the school overall remains inade- quate. The school had previously scored a satisfactory grade. The inspector’s report says progress made by pupils in writing was inadequate and for the last two years standards in maths had been below the national average. It adds: “The quality of teaching

has not improved fast enough since the previous inspection. Teachers’ marking is too variable and this means some pupils do not know what they need to do to improve.”

KCC’s director of education, Sue Rogers, said: “We have beenwork- ing hard for some time to improve many areas within the school.” A new headteacher, Cathy Far-

thing, was appointed in January last year. Ms Rogers added: “The manage-

ment team has implemented tar- geted training and resources to remedy the inadequacies identified in the report and strong leadership has made sure all teachers know good teaching is an expectation. “This includes two-weekly progress monitoring for every pupil, working with other local schools to improve teaching meth- ods, a new staffing structure and expanding our teacher training programmes. “We expect the school to be mov-

ing out of serious weaknesses by the next inspection.”
