John Edwards is the Street Scene Officer in the Environmental Services Section at Maidstone Borough Council, based at the council’s depot in Parkwood.
What does your job involve?
I help to deliver Maidstone Borough Council’s street scene responsibilities. This encompasses a range of environmental services such as street cleansing, grounds maintenance, customer services, waste and recycling and the maintenance of borough owned street furniture such as benches, bus shelters and bollards.
What attracted you to the job?
I wanted to make a difference to the streets of Maidstone. I have lived in the town for a number of years and I am proud of the area. Working towards improving Maidstone’s streets is still the most attractive part of the job for me.
What do you like most about your job?
There are various aspects of my job that I enjoy from dealing with members of the public to dealing with a host of agencies and contractors. The wide variety of roles keeps the job challenging and fresh but ultimately, I enjoy ensuring the street scene environment in Maidstone is enjoyed by residents, visitors and businesses of the borough.
What does customer service mean to you?
For me, understanding the customer’s needs and requirements and delivering a superior service is what the job is all about. Street scene issues normally create strong feelings so a sympathetic demeanour is needed, coupled with a strong sense of what is right.
