Trailblazers Myerscough are the future

College

As spring rolls in and the clocks move forward, the landscape for Apprenticeships and workbased training continues to change as new initiatives gain momentum. As the coalition government seeks to reform Apprenticeships, they are looking to employers and industry bodies to take an active role in shaping Apprenticeship standards and qualifications through a range of sector 'trailblazers'. As the leading provider of greenkeeping apprenticeships in the UK, Myerscough College will take an active role in supporting this review

THE first sector within Horticulture to see, first-hand, the impact of the changes will be Sportsturf-Greenkeeping, as the Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) launch a trailblazer within the sector. During National Apprenticeship Week, a delegation headed by the GTC visited 10 Downing Street to make representations on the changes.

Myerscough College Greenkeeping Apprentice, Ryan Bezzant from Ealing Golf Club, was selected to be part of this visit, saying; “I was delighted to be selected by the GTC to represent Greenkeeping Apprentices from across England. It was a remarkable occasion, and one I will remember for the rest of my life. I now want to focus on my Apprenticeship at Ealing Golf Club and take this opportunity to thank my family, Myerscough College, and all my colleagues at the golf club for supporting on my Apprenticeship journey so far.”

Peter Caney, Assistant Principal of Skills & Development at Myerscough College, said: “Myerscough College is currently delivering workplace training to just over 350 Sportsturf Apprentices throughout England. Many of our ex- Apprentices have progressed into top jobs within the profession on a national and international basis.”

"Working alongside the GTC, BIGGA, employers and providers, Myerscough College will take an active role in reviewing the Apprenticeship standards to ensure quality Apprenticeships continue to serve the profession for many years to come.”

“We are delighted that Ryan was able to fly the flag for Greenkeeping Apprentices at Downing Street. As a young, enthusiastic and passionate trainee Greenkeeper, he was very deserving of the invite and I’m sure he gave a good account of the sector and importance of high quality apprenticeship training.”

National Apprenticeship Week

At the beginning of March was National Apprenticeship Week. The aim, as usual, was to drive the impact and awareness of Apprenticeships amongst employers, and many Myerscough College Apprentices made the headlines.

As part of the Prime Minister’s “Made by Apprentices” campaign, several of our Apprentices were featured as part of a social media campaign - based around Twitter and Pinterest - to highlight the work of Apprentices across the country. Michael Dobson, Level 3 Sportsturf at Liverpool FC and Joe Clements, Level 3 Horticulture at Levens Hall both made the shortlist and were featured on the Prime Minister’s social media channels.

Another focus of the week was on success stories with a feature highlighting our work with Manchester City FC. Our National Training Manager, Phil Lomas, went back to the floor and spent time working with Lee Jackson and the Grounds Team in the build up to the FA Cup clash against Chelsea where all the Grounds Team were either current or
