‘To live in the Outer Hebrides is to experience a way of life rich in culture and history’

them, the length and breadth of the Hebrides, it has been standing room only. I’ve been delighted, too, by the reception

for Hebrides, the photo companion book to the trilogy, which we brought out last autumn. The book’s stunning photographs of the islands were taken by David Wilson, who was my designer on Machair, and who loved Lewis so much he went to live there when he retired. I wrote text to accompany his photographs, to tell the story of my history with the islands, and the reasons for choosing the locations I used in the trilogy. It, too, has become a best- seller, in both Britain and France. To live in the Outer Hebrides is to experi-

ence a way of life rich in culture and history, and radically different from that of the Scottish mainland. In a sense, people on the Western Isles live on the edge, not only geographically, but culturally. Over the centuries people there have endured the hardships of weather, conflict, persecution and famine, breeding a hardy, but cheerful population who are open and welcoming. Now, in the modern world, many things have improved and life is certainly more comfortable than it once was. But the people haven’t changed. And it would be impossible to visit these islands and meet the folk who live there without falling in love with both.
