JOHN MUIR FESTIVAL BEGINS The John Muir Festival is to open with a night-time arts event on 17 and 18 April. This also marks the international launch of The Kelpies at Helix Park in Falkirk. The celebration marks the start of a series of exciting John Muir Festival events over nine days. Artist Andy Scott’s colossal 300-tonne, 30-metre high horses heads’ sculptures will be ‘brought to life’ with a breathtaking light, sound and fl ame performance by Groupe F, the internationally renowned pyrotechnic company that famously lit up the Eiffel Tower at the Millennium.

Roaring success
Photographer Charles Sainsbury-Plaice has begun stocking a range of musical greetings cards on his website. The noisy cards include the sounds of red deer rutting, red grouse calling, hunting horns sounding and shotguns fi ring. The cards, which are made by Really Wild Cards, use images from Agripix, Sainsbury-Plaice’s online rural image library. His website also stocks a range of coasters, tablemats, bags, gift wrap, kitchen worktop protectors and platters, all decorated with countryside images.

THE SWORD AND THE STONES Stone blocks which were quarried from the Abbey Craig in Stirling 150 years ago are set to be used as part of the refurbishment of the National Wallace Monument this spring. Excavated for the construction of the monument in 1861, not all of the stone was used at the time and now some of the remaining pieces will be employed to create a plinth for a new case to house one of the most famous artifacts within the monument – the Wallace sword.
DIGGIN’ IT An internationally-signifi cant dig at the Links of Noltland on the coast of Westray in Orkney has been named Rescue Dig of the Year at the Current Archaeology Awards in London. The dig, which was commissioned by Historic Scotland and carried out by EASE Archaeology, sheds valuable light on domestic and ritual life in prehistoric Orkney. The site has fallen victim to rapid coastal and wind erosion and archaeologists face a race against time to uncover its secrets before they are lost to the elements.
