PLACES OF INTEREST Masmak Fort Built in 1865 on the site of an older fort, Masmak Fort is the most important historical monument in Riyadh. The mud-walled construction was recaptured by King Abdulaziz bin Saud and his men during the reconquest of 1902 and, after renovation work in the early 1980s, it stands today as a monument to Ibn Saud and his reunifi cation of Saudi Arabia. Within the fort, visitors will fi nd exhibits of traditional attire and crafts, a diwan – or reception chamber – with an open courtyard, a functioning well, a square watch tower and mosque. Just 200 metres southeast of
Masmak Fort is Al Thumairi Gate, one of nine gates that once led into the city. The walls surrounding the gate were pulled down in 1950.
