INSIDER TIPS

Important reminders about local etiquette

1. Alcohol is banned throughout Saudi Arabia and is not available anywhere.

2. It is common for men and

women to be allocated separate areas in the kingdom for dining and parties.

3. Many public places such as hotels and restaurants have

family rooms where women and families are served.

4. Women are expected to

dress conservatively with long skirts, sleeves at elbow length or longer and necklines that are not revealing.

5. During business meetings, be aware that many Saudi men will not shake hands with women out of respect, so avoid offering your hand unless you are prompted to do so.

Te Moqalqal, boneless lamb with pepper and tomato sauce and Matazzez, one of the oldest Najdi lamb recipes (cooked with vegetables and small round bread), are both highlights, as is Sabeeb, a dessert of homemade brown bread topped with honey and a cup of hot black chai tea. For large groups, the Sofra Alqarya includes a

bit of everything and, each February, the popular Faqas desert truffle also features on the menu. At the lower end of the price spectrum, the village provides a cost-effective get-together over dinner. +966 1 2250034,
