T e increase in the number of hosted exhibitions at Riyadh International Conference and Exhibition Center between 2012 and 2013

increase the number of exhibitions and occupancy levels,” says Al Omran. “We constantly strive to expand

percent increase in the number of hosted exhibitions and more than a 35 percent increase in occupied space. They all prove that the centre is capable of helping meet the growing demand on the sector. “I would like to stress the fact that all

the exhibitions that were hosted at the venue were world-class, like the well- established Riyadh International Book Fair, which attracted more than 40,000 visitors. The successful execution of that fair required the full mobilisation of our human, technical and logistics capacity.” The volume was in line with the

management’s expectations for the year. In total, 2013 saw RICEC host 31 exhibitions encompassing both consumer and business events, which equates to a 10 percent increase compared on 2012. The activities in the early part of 2014 certainly point to a further year-on-year increase. “Considering we are still in the fi rst

half of 2014, reservations are close to the 2013 number and we hope to

and enhance the tools we have in order to be more competitive in the GCC at least. This includes staying informed about the most recent advancements in the international industry and integrating them into our long-term plans and strategies. This has been important in reaching – and also exceeding – our objectives in terms of occupancy rates in the last couple of years.” There is an appetite for more. A

feasibility study is about to be completed on proposals to expand the centre by 5,000 square metres, which is expected to start some time in 2015. Part of the ongoing

expansion plans is a 200-room four-star hotel. According to Al Omran, it’s a clear sign that the meetings sector in Saudi is emerging from its infancy and beginning to provide the infrastructure and the service level to compete on an international stage. He also points to the development of the Saudi Exhibition and Conference Bureau (SECB) as a key turning point. “There is no doubt that the establishment

of the SECB is a major turning point which will help move the industry forward,” says Al Omran. “It will play a vital role in raising awareness around the importance of the industry for economic growth and defi ne the future framework and fundamental strategies for this industry here.”
