4.You can treat any failed interviews as ‘practice’ for their graduate schemes.


I started my search for a placement with a long list of 124 companies, compiled from various different sources and then prioritised. Thankfully I didn’t have to apply to all 124 before I started getting interview offers. I went to four interviews, and by the last one I’d actually managed to relax. Before I knew it, and feeling like I’d just had an interesting conversation rather than an interview, I had an offer for the placement I’d really wanted all along. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have messed up that interview if I hadn’t had the three before, so even if you didn’t manage to get a placement you’ve had some invaluable practice.


At one of my interviews, I was told the department get so many applications for their permanent graduate positions that the first way they cut the pile down is to discard any from people who haven’t done a placement year. Whilst this isn’t necessarily commonplace, having a year’s experience could be the deciding factor between you and another candidate.


Lab work at


university is not the same as lab work in the real world!
