What is your role within the organisation?

I was appointed Academic Dean at Glion London to oversee the first 2013 student intake and lead the academic team. My current role, launching Glion’s first branch campus in London, presents such exciting opportunities for the growth of hospitality degrees in the UK. With a wealth of career opportunities on the doorstep and a thriving hospitality sector at their fingertips, I am excited to welcome Glion London’s first students – the future leaders of hospitality management.

Why was the decision taken to open a campus in London?

The addition of Glion London illustrates the growing demand worldwide for hospitality professionals. When looking for locations to expand, London was the natural choice. As one of the most important financial and business hubs in the world, the city neatly aligns with our educational offer. It is one of the most international and desirable places to pursue international studies, giving our students an ideal setting to learn and thrive. Central London alone is home to more than 1,600 hotels, offering students ample opportunities to do internships and practice their skills.

What elements of Swiss learning will be applied to the London campus?

Glion London is a branch campus

with the same programme structure and ethos as Glion Switzerland. Both Glion and Glion London follow the exceptional Swiss approach to hospitality education, combining theoretical and practical learning as well as professional development. The curricular is divided into three sections; professional development, general education and entrepreneurial education. Each area is focused on developing specific aptitudes in order for graduates to be fully prepared to lead and manage teams. Glion also looks to develop confidence and self- discipline. Students are required to wear business attire to class, which is part of their preparation for successful entry into the professional world. Additionally, courses offer craft-based learning where students get hands on practical experience to be able to fully understand the functions they will manage and the operational challenges they will face throughout their careers.

Why would a student look to study a course on Hospitality?

Glion delivers an education in management, focused on the hospitality industry and aligned with the needs of this industry. However, since we are preparing business managers, our graduates are fully prepared to work in many different sectors and industries.

Over the last ten years or so, hospitality higher education has shifted from offering general undergraduate programmes

in hospitality management to specialised education in order to respond to the current demand for function-oriented professionals within the field. The combination of these two – a business degree with a focus on different areas of specialisations- allows our students to follow diverse career paths in and outside the industry, from marketing to finance to human resources, in sectors such as luxury brands, entertainment, sports and finance. For example, we currently have graduates working for Rolex, a world famous brand renowned for its high end watches and jewellery. Others have become entrepreneurs. By the same token, many international companies such as Bloomberg TV, JP Morgan and Louis Vuitton, which are outside the traditional scope of the hospitality industry, recruit graduates from Glion. They are all looking for people with the right mindset, attitude, customer-service orientation and managerial skills.

The hospitality industry continues to be one of the most dynamic in the world and our students certainly pay attention to the opportunities open to them. From sports and entertainment management and spa and wellness resorts management, to defining the public policy for tourism growth, hospitality certainly has a very diverse portfolio of job opportunities for professionals in the industry.
