MSC PUBLIC HEALTH AT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY

Brookes’ highly successful and innovative MSc in Public Health welcomes UK, EU and international applicants from a wide range of professions. The course recognises that the health of communities is a concern of a wide group of professionals and that health is related to a variety of factors, including individual biology and genetics, behavioural factors, socio-economic factors and environmental factors. The course’s underlying principle is that good health is a right, not a privilege.

Who is the course designed for?

This course is suitable for those seeking a career in public health, traditionally from clinical backgrounds and allied health professionals. Students with a non-health related degree who have work experience in a health related field are welcome and encouraged to apply. The course will appeal to those seeking to broaden their knowledge and skill set, and for those preparing for advancement in their field or within their organisation.

New Specialist Tracks for 2014

From September 2014, students can take either the General track or one of three more specialist tracks. •

Preventive and Behavioural Health

• Communicable Diseases • Leadership and Management.

Specialist tracks will enable students to focus on key public health areas, and are suitable for students who

have a clear idea about their learning and career development needs. The General track will probably suit students who want a more general public health education and who do not currently have a specialist career development need or direction, for example students working towards Faculty of Public Health examinations.

The Programme aims to: •

Provide graduates with an advanced education in Public Health that is fit for the 21st Century, reflecting the growing significance of non- communicable diseases in all world regions, alongside a traditional focus on communicable and infectious disease

Enable graduates to demonstrate and critically evaluate integrated knowledge, skills and values which underpin action, reflection and evaluation of their public health practice

Prepare graduates so that they are able to critically evaluate public health research evidence and have a solid grounding in research methods as a basis for future research training and degrees

Give students opportunities to take different general and specialist pathways within the Programme, to meet individual academic and career development preferences

Encourage students to take the Public Health knowledge gained on the programme into their future workplaces and bring new and improved perspectives to a range of professions

Furnish graduates with key competencies so that they are well placed to develop their career within the UK Faculty of Public Health specialist training framework
