VIKINGS RETURN TO THE ISLES The Vikings are returning to the Western Isles after 1,000 years to take part in one of Scotland’s Year of Homecoming events in Stornoway. Forty Shetland Vikings will land at Cuddy Point on 8 August and take control of the Harris Tweed Hebrides Tattoo (Tatu Innse Gall) alongside pipe bands including six-times World Championship-winner the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. The Jarl Squad from Shetland represents the Up Helly Aa fi re festival, which is held

on the last Tuesday in January in Lerwick and is the largest fi re festival in Europe. This year’s Jarl Squad chose to base its suit on a simple black-and-white theme; the suits were hand made for all 63 squad members during the previous year. The tattoo begins on Friday evening, beneath

the beautiful Lews Castle, with performances from pipe bands from Canada, the Highlands, the islands and beyond. Dancers from all over the Hebrides will converge on Stornoway to entertain the crowds accompanied by a samba band. Saturday 9 August will be carnival day in Stornoway with pipe bands and fl oats parading through the town. In the evening, a grand concert will be held in the new Lochside Arena featuring the best in piping, Gaelic and contemporary music of the Hebrides.
