CONTRIBUTING WRITERS Creation is never a simple thing. Ask any artist, be they painters, sculptors, musi-

cians or any of the other myriad forms of expression. It takes work, patience and practice… a lifetime of it. It is worth the effort, though. Anyone who has strolled the halls of museums across

the land is a beneficiary of the creator’s blood, sweat and tears. I’ll never forget the first time I stood in front of Monet’s water lilies masterpiece at Art Institute of Chicago at 16. I was completely transfixed—the paint is immobile, 100 years of drying has solidified it. But I could feel the motion of the water, the gentle undulation of the reflected sky, I could sense the gentle, moist breeze coming across the ponds at Giverny. I stood there for what seemed like hours. It was the same experience witnessing the Mona Lisa’s enigmatic stare during my

first visit to the Louvre, it was as if she was looking right through me across the ages of time and would be long after I left my earthly bonds. Viewing the Winged Nike of Samothrace, even headless, you can feel the graceful tension in its wings—it’s as if she’s a millisecond from her leap into flight. Moments like that have been repeated in every institution that I have ever visited. The thrill of feeling art’s power never gets old. I fell in love with the experience of it. Art and artists are vital to our culture and its survival, expressing every form of this human experience and recording those moments within the framework of their times. The culture they live in may be dust, but the expression of it, in the countless artistic forms, lives on forever. We cannot converse with someone from the time of the Romans, but you can see how they lived in frozen volcanic moments that are Pompeii and Herculaneum. We can’t know the daily life of a Parisian courtesan, but we can view her beauty locked forever in paintings such as La Grande Odalisque by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Done in 1814, the painting carries the woman’s sexual vitality across time with a verve that is truly remarkable. So, take a moment out of your busy life and visit your local museum, gallery or sculpture garden. If you look hard, you might just see a part of your human experi- ence reflected in the frozen images there. Look deep, there is a timeless story being told… if you are patient enough to listen.
