The weekend has nominal roots in sundry events popular with the lesbian community orbiting what was once a “ladies golf tournament,” named for actress and television personality, Dinah Shore. Though reportedly not gay herself (in fact, she famously dated former Hollywood super-stud Burt Reynolds), Shore, who died in 1994, was considered a friend to the LGBT community. “We’ve interchanged both names throughout,” says Hanson regarding whether the event should be referred to simply as, “The Dinah” or The Dinah Shore Weekend. “We own the trademark to The Dinah and so our moniker is The Dinah; but both descriptions are commonly interchanged when talking about the original Dinah
Shore Weekend in Palm Springs, California.” One might wonder if Hanson feels any pressure be-
ing in charge of the world’s largest gathering of lesbi- ans in terms of ensuring a positive public image for the lesbian community in general. “We don’t think of ourselves as custodians of the world image of lesbian and bi women, so no pressure there,” she says. “We think of ourselves as the custodian of lesbian celebra- tion at its best. It’s about sharing a mutual respect and understanding for the different lives women live; the struggles they face, the obstacles they’ve overcome, the battles they won and the successes they have accomplished.” Given that reputation as the ultimate lesbian
celebration and given the fact that Tegan & Sara have already resolved to turn up the fun like never before
as The Dinah’s headliners, 2014 is bound to be one heck of a party. “For us when we do events we just want to give people a good time,” says Quin. “We’ll just have been on a cruise with Paramore to the Bahamas playing for fans on the cruise; and, before that, playing a big outdoor carnival in Canada.” Quin is sure she and twin sis Tegan will be able to
acclimate to the debauchery at Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend. “I think it will be a great time!”
