NOT SO INNOCENT HITS ALL THE NOTES
BRIGHT, FUN, HARDCORE AND EVEN A LITTLE VANILLA
by thom senzee
We caught up with Bill Freyer, co-owner of the desert’s newest adult boutique, Not So Innocent (NSI) on Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, to ask him a few questions about what makes NSI not so innocent after all. Freyer was co-owner of San Diego’s popular and wildly successful adult
shop, Pleasures and Treasures. Now, he’s using capital earned from cashing out of that partnership to pave a new road in the desert with something unique amongst the array of adult retail stores in the Coachella Valley. Ac- cording to Freyer, NSI has an all-inclusive vibe and even the availability of by-appointment-only private shopping, with which you can have the whole store to yourself for an uninhibited adult shopping experience—perfect if you just can’t wait until after you leave public office to get your freak on.
So what’s the name “Not So Innocent” all about? Was there a particular inspiration or anecdote? My partner Joey and I were driving back to San Diego after signing the lease
on the new store in Palm Springs and throwing different names around and, since we aren’t so innocent ourselves, Not So Innocent popped up and we both loved it. What’s different about this store than Pleasures & Treasures, of which I believe you are part owner ? I was co-owner of Pleasures & Treasures, but sold my shares to my business
partner, Tim Melodick. This gave us the capital to open Not So Innocent. We are making our new store a cross between classy and edgy, eclectic, industrial, and down right fun as well. Is Not So Innocent primarily a sexy clothing store or adult novelty boutique—or a hybrid of both? The store is everything from sexy underwear and jocks, hot swimwear, cock
rings, lubricants, T-shirts, tanks, lingerie for women, bachelorette party items, to kink and fetish gear. Fun and fantasy meets hardcore industrial. In a word, how would you describe the type of customer you hope to attract? We want the most vanilla customer to the hardcore fetishist, no one is ever not welcome and we are willing to educate those who need it.

Is there something for everyone: guys, gals, gay, straight, etc? Or do you focus mainly on the gay market? We are probably about 65 percent gay, and 35 percent straight, mixed.
How are you involved in the desert community in terms of giving back? We just joined the Chamber of Commerce here and are looking forward to
doing work with them. We also just donated a large basket to The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence through the Bear Convergence Auction held here last month. What’s the biggest misconception about the adult merchandise retail industry? That it is sleezy and creepy. We are bright and fun—no lurkers hanging
around. How has the industry changed through the years? Educationally, we can describe ingredients in a product, advice for those
with allergies and care about the customer. It is not just about the dollar here at our store. We care. What’s next for Not So Innocent? We just want to be a part of the community, and welcomed among all of the
other long-standing businesses—a fresh face for people to come and visit. Anything you’d like to add? One special thing that we offer is private shopping. Whether you are a movie
star or an elected official, or just someone who gets embarrassed easily, you can book an appointment here for your own private experience.
Not So Innocent is located at 2100 North Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. For more information call 760.332.0999 or check out its facebook page!
