TIME AND THE CONWAYS A play by J.B. Priestley, Time and the Conways seeks


to illustrate J. W. Dunne’s Theory of Time. Simply put, the theory is, that all moments in time are taking place at once, at the same time. Thus the play oper- ates on many different levels—a political history of Britain between the wars, a universal tragedy, a family romance and a metaphysical examination of the perception of time—or does it? Considered one of Priestley’s most accomplished and many-layered works for the stage, illustrated by the wealthy Con- way family at various times beginning in 1919 when at the zenith of their wealth and flashing forward to 1939: when the grown children have gathered to settle family accounts in a world not so bright. The play travels forward and back in time, illustrating how their lives have failed in various ways, by choices made and circumstances created by those decisions. Time and the Conways takes place on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage at the Old Globe Theatre from Saturday, March 29 through Sunday, May 4. A MASKED BALL Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, primarily known for his most recognizable operatic com- positions, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, La Traviata and Aida is considered one of the preeminent opera composers of the 19th century. One of his lesser known piecesUn Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) is coming to the San Diego Civic Theatre stage at 1100 3rd Avenue in downtown San Diego for four performances;Saturday, March 8, Tuesday, March 11, Friday, March 14 and Sunday, March 16. And what a cast! Today’s hot Polish lyric tenor Piotr Beczala, Bulgaria’s “Stradivarius,“ Soprano Kras- simira Stoyanova and the great American mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe round up the stellar cast in this opera inspired by the real-life assassination of King Gustav III. RED Mark Rothko is considered one of the superstars in the American abstract expres- sionist painting movement, best known for his rectangular fields of color and light. The play is set at a critical point in Rothko’s career; he has been challenged to create a definitive work of art for the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. The problem is his neophyte assistant who represents a new generation of artists and their perspective, leading to questions about Rothko’s theories and labeling him a sell-out. Written by John Logan, known for his scripts for Academy Award nominees, The Gladiator and The Aviator, the Golden Globe winning film ver- sion of Sweeney Todd with Tim Burton and the James Bond film Skyfall, Logan has returned to his first love—playwriting - and the result isRed.
