Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Santa Rosa Junior College’s (SRJC) Concussion Management Program has been named the 2014 Grand Silver win-

ner of the NASPA Excellence Awards. Dr. Nancy Chinn and Monica Ohkubo, the collabor- ative leaders of the program, will be honored in March

Department at SRJC, and Ohkubo is the Head Certified Athletic trainer at SRJC. Dr. Chinn found that only 17 percent of California Community Colleges were implementing best practices for concussion management that included baseline test- ing. Drawing from her 2010 research, Chinn and her department’s joint collabo- ration with Ohkubo’s Sports Medicine department has helped shape the Program as one that directly links and applies research into practice. In their NASPA submission, Chinn and Ohkubo explain that “Since its implementa- tion in 2010, the (Concussion Management)

program has

baseline testing and provided comprehensive concussion education to over 1,500 stu- dent athletes. Additionally, over 100 student athletes have been diagnosed with concus- sion and participated in a systematic interdisciplinary approach for a safer and suc- cessful return to play and the classroom.” “What is unique about the SRJC program is the level of support regarding the student’s academic needs,” commented Patie Wegman, Dean of Disabled Students Programs and Services. “All contact sport athletes at SRJC now receive in-depth concus- sion education and baseline assessment prior to the start of their sport season. The like- lihood of reporting a sports concussion has dramatically increased, in large part due to the culture shift brought on by the work of Dr. Chinn and Ms. Ohkubo.”

Ron Myers, SRJC Dean conducted computerized of Kinesiology, Athletics

and Dance, said, “These two innovative educational lead- ers have spent countless hours developing the program. Their work has proven to be a shin- ing example of how dedica- tion to their profession and the students they touch promotes an extremely positive contri- bution to all involved.” NASPA is a leader in the

advancement and sustain- ability of the student affairs profession. The organization “recognizes the contribu- tions of members who are transforming higher educa- tion through outstanding pro- grams, innovative services, and effective administration” (www.naspa.org) from lead- ers such as Dr. Chinn and Ohkubo. Monica Ohkubo is currently a doctoral student at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and Nancy Chinn completed her doc- toral research in Concussion Management from UC Davis School of Education.
