Musical Notes in Sonoma County by Shekeyna Black •Shekeyna@AMiracleProductionAMP.com

Final Humor # 10

Subject: Power Outage We had an outage at my place this morning and my PC, laptop, TV, DVD, iPad & my new surround sound music system all shut down. Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat and to top it off it was snowing outside, so I couldn't play golf. I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I

remembered that this also needs power, so I talked with my wife for a few hours.

She seems like a nice person.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA. ~ “Every person along my musical journey over the past 50 years has helped me in a way that I could never repay” reflects singer/songwriter Lisa Iskin. She quotes her friend and mentor Pat Britton’s words of wisdom, “None of

us makes it

in music or life without oth- ers." Her reflec- tion is especially poignant during Women’s History Month; which is celebrated nation- ally during the

month of March, in part, due to a key group of women from Sonoma County who founded the National Women’s History Project.

especially the unsung heroes, the musicians who play music for music’s sake. Lisa Iskin grew up in Los Angeles County singing and playing guitar and has been a Sonoma County resident for many years. Music is a passion that weaves its way throughout the themes of her life. She lost her partner, Bruce Crosby, to can- cer when he was only 31 years old. Lisa honors his memory in one of her favorite songs they co-wrote together in 1982 called, “The First Waltz,” writ- ten from the perspective of dancing on their 50th anniver- sary, lovingly recalling how they first met.

Lisa Iskin, in addition to being a talented artist, has

an unusual claim to fame in Sonoma County. Patrons of Old Chicago Pizza in Petaluma are familiar with her namesake house salad. She created the big bowl salad with delicious toppings in 1978 when she helped manage the restaurant and the owner named it after her culinary creativ- ity.

Iskin describes

her creative pro- cess when work- ing on music as “Get hit

with

an idea, write it down, then rewrite

the heck out of it until it is 'done', and then fine tune it again (and again). It is usually the 'hook' that comes first.” Fans can experience the results of Lisa Iskin’s cre- ative process at upcoming shows. She performs at Aqus in Petaluma on April 19th as part of the musical group Un Deux Trois that plays, “French Music with a Twist.” The tal- ented trio also appears on April 25th at the French Garden in Sebastopol.

Lisa Iskin will perform

as a solo/singer/songwriter in concert at Artichoke Music in Portland this summer. Additionally, Iskin will par- ticipate in the Folk Alliance Regional West (FAR-West) Music Conference in October in Oakland. FAR-West is a prestigious leader in the folk and acoustic music com- munity.

though we had warm clothes underneath, still found its way below the zippers of our coats. The short trip was worth it because in was my 14 year anniversary with my wife and our daughter got to come with us. We all got to bond that much more. I believe spend- ing quality time together is essential and really fun. We did a lot of cooking at the house and did not go out to eat once. Each place we went, we made it our home. I tried not to think about my paper as much as I could, but the ideas still kept coming on how the make the next issue better than the last.

A sincere thanks goes out to all the writers, advertisers and contributors and well as the readers who have been spreading the word around about what a fun publication we are, and how much we are not like any of the other papers out there. I like to think that all the papers and magazines serve a purpose and have a place in someone's life somewhere. I know for sure...we have found ours. May this paper find you well!
