DVD ROUNDUP

Bruce Springsteen fans are a devoted bunch. I know because I am one. Perhaps not as big a fan as many of the people interviewed on the new DVD release Bruce & I (Eagle Vi- sion), but a fan nonetheless. This new docu- mentary film, created by Mr. Wolf & Ridley Scott & Associ- ates, takes us literally around the world meeting diehard Springsteen fans. The fans, and all races, colors, sizes and nationalities but the one thing they all share is an adoration for the man, the myth, the leg- end from New Jersey known to many as “the boss.” The fan stories are at times humorous, at times touching. Many of the stories are truly extraordinary. The filmmakers interspersed lots of rare clips of Bruce per- forming. One of the clips that brought a real grin to my face was a black and white film from the early 70s that found Bruce onstage alone with an acoustic guitar performing one of my favorite songs from his first album called “Growin’ up.” Many times fan stories intersect with the film clips to great effect. Like the one fan somewhere in Europe who tells the story of seeing Bruce walking down the street with Clarence Clemons one afternoon when they were in town. The guy and his band were playing on the street and he called out to Bruce and asked him to come up and play a song. At first Bruce continued to walk on, then the guy called out to them a second time. Bruce circled back around and walked over to the area where the guy was playing with his acoustic band, took one of the two guitars and proceeded to play a couple of songs with the

guy. Of course a crowd quickly gathered and Bruce took it all in stride signing a few auto- graphs as he and the Big Man made their way on to their destination. Talk about making somebody a fan for life? Of course this is just one example of the great sto- ries within this documentary. It is absolutely one of the finest documentaries I have seen in a while and certainly the best one that is a study of the fans rather than the artist. Also included as a bonus are several songs from hard rock calling 2012 held at Hyde Park in London including “Thunder Road,” “Because the Night,” “Shackled and Drawn,” “We are Alive,” and a pair of real treats with Paul McCartney joining the band on “I Saw Her Standing There” and “Twist and Shout.”

I’ve got to highly recommend this DVD, espe- cially if you love Springsteen or even if you simply know what it’s like to be a hard-core fan of a particular artist. It’s a winner all the way around.... Eric Clapton:The 1970’s Review(Sexy Intellectual) is a treasure. After inventing himself as the greatest gui- tarist in Britain, (to the point that some fans were calling him “God”) perhaps the world, following the breakup of the band Cream, Eric Clapton happened upon a group from North America called simply “The Band.” That music hit Eric between the eyes like a ton of bricks and would change his direction completely. Soon he was hooking up with old friend Steve Winwood to form Blind Faith, a group that never quite gelled. What did hap- pen was Clapton quickly took up with the
