was on his side, too. So cool to see Casey Driessen from the bluegrass side of things do some great work on fiddle during Franti's set. Casey also had a sweet solo shot with ARU ear- lier in the evening while standing and playing next to Jimmy Herring. Nicky Sanders of the Steep Canyon Rangers was backstage as a fid- dler-for-hire as well, but Casey had it covered. I thought Franti’s "Life Is Better With You" with Artimus Pyle and Warren Haynes sitting in was rockin’. Jay Bowman, Ron Holloway, Ron Johnson, Mike Barnes, Jeff Sipe and Ike Stub- blefield also sat in on Franti’s set. Very cool. “I haven't been to a party like this in a long
time," said Gregg Allman, from the Christmas Jam stage. Gregg's set was old school conta- gious as he was in good voice and the crowd ate it up. Very cool to see Allman backed up by Jeff Sipe on drums and Count M’Butu on percus- sion next to him again. Audley Freed's solos were a little too low in the mix, but he still sounded good and he held more than held his own on guitar. And, nothing against Derek Trucks, but I still to love to see and hear War- ren playing slide guitar for a change, just like the old days. Bill Evans, Ron Holloway, Craig Sorrells and Greg Hollowell (of the Asheville Horns) and Oteil Burbridge sat in as well. The cast and crew backed up Gregg on "Statesboro Blues," "Dreams," "Stormy Monday," "One Way Out," and my friend Sarah D got her a "Soulshine" with both Gregg and Warren shar- ing the lead vocals. Sweet! That jam was fol- lowed by sets from Grace Potter and Gov’t Mule with special guest John Scofield. Throughout the night, all the horn players
added a lot to the grooves. It was a collabora- tive night all of the way around. I talked to Warren backstage after the Gregg Allman set and he was all smiles and looked healthy and happy in his hometown of Asheville. •
