THE VINE
“Covering the South...” Vol. 2, Issue 9 • February 2014
Welcome to issue #9. Many of us were blindsided when we got the news last month
that Johnny Wyker was dead. Wyker had just been so full of life. Johnny was constantly coming up with new ideas and inventions, and he was a seemingly endless fount of historical facts and data regard- ing both the Muscle Shoals music scene and the Macon, Georgia/ Capricorn Records scene of the 1970s. Virtually everyone that knew him loved him, and several of those individuals spoke with us about Johnny, including Chuck Leavell, Johnny Townsend and Dick Cooper - who has his own feature in this issue. Cooper is the curator of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame as well as an event planner, pro- fessional photographer, and all-around entrepreneur. The interview was conducted by our new contributing writer Michael Limnios of Greece. Michael has written countless articles and conducted tons of interviews for his website
blues.gr. He also contributed a second fea- ture for this issue, an interview with Ann Sandland concerning her book- A Never Ending Groove - about her husband Johnny. We are also very happy to present an in-depth interview with
Donnie Winters, a founding member of the Winters Brothers Band who is currently recording his debut solo album. Donnie opens up about his musical family, playing the Volunteer Jams, and much more. Roxanne Lark once again presents a beautiful variety of images
from around the South in her Southern Lens feature, and she went back on the road to Rosedale plantation in Charlotte to tell us all about it. We are happy to welcome aboard Scott Glover as a regular con-
tributing photographer. You’ll see his byline at the bottom of many of the photographs within this issue, including the multipage feature “Living in the Past where Scott photographed a Civil War reenact- ment. Of course there are also plenty of CD reviews, DVD reviews, book
reviews, and concert reviews. We hope you enjoy the issue, and also hope that you will tune in on Sunday nights to join us for the weekly KUDZOO Radio Hour.(
