Report From The 25th Annual Warren Haynes

Christmas Jam by Derek Halsey I had a great time at Warren Haynes’

Christmas Jam for Habitat for Humanity (December 13-14, 2013) in Asheville this year as I drove off the mountain in Banner Elk, NC, to catch Saturday night’s portion of the event. First and foremost, I was there to see Aquarium Rescue Unit because I’ve never seen Col. Bruce Hampton play with Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe and Oteil Burbridge live before and I was not disappointed. As Aquar- ium Rescue Unit’s set continued, it was a real treat to watch the respect given to the Colonel with 15 musicians onstage at the end, all hav- ing big fun while jamming on "Space Is The Place" and "Right Now." I talked to Col. Bruce for a minute back-

stage and he was in good spirits as we re-con- nected the Ludlow Garage-Cincinnati dots for a minute with shared friends. The Col.'s Hampton Grease Band opened for the Allman Brothers at the Ludlow Garage on the night that the infamous Allman’s Live at Ludlow Garage live album was recorded back in my hometown of Cincinnati in 1970. During ARU’s portion of the show, Roo-

sevelt Collier brought his steel guitar rippage to the groove along with other guests Bill Evans, Ike Stubblefield, Billy Thornton, Ron Holloway, Craig Sorrells and Mike Barnes and that was cool. It was the perfect choice for an opening act after Warren’s opening solo song.

is not the heaviest band in the world, but they are fun and the audience enjoyed socializing and dancing as they played, including where we were at Party Central, first row up top in section 201 with my friends Sarah Elizabeth Durham and Lynne Lear and an ever-chang- ing cast of characters, including folks I ran into such as the Siren Mountain Jam Festival ladies Carroll and Kirsten Tiedemann and

newer-made friends as well. Once again, it was a good move to put them early in the night, and Warren sat in with them on Led Zep’s “Fool In The Rain.” Michael Franti is another artist I’ve never

seen live before and he turned out to be one of the many highlights of the show. Franti kept his earthy grooves pumped up and I en- joyed it and was very impressed. The crowd
