WE’RE MAKING FISHING in BC Even Better

THE FRESHWATER FISHERIES SOCIETY OF BC WAS CREATED IN 2003 AS A PRIVATE, NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, FUNDED LARGELY

BY FISHING LICENCE REVENUES. THE SOCIETY EXISTS FOR AND BECAUSE OF YOU – THE ANGLERS OF BC.

THE FRESHWATER FISHERIES SOCIETY OF BC was created in 2003 as a private, not-for-profit organization, funded largely by fishing licence revenues. The Society exists for and because of you – the anglers of BC. When you purchase your fishing licence, you’re helping to fund our work. The Society produces 8 million hatchery trout, char, and kokanee salmon each year and stocks them in over 800 lakes around BC. Working closely with the Province and other partners, the Society conducts research on fish survival, growth, and angling effort on hundreds of lakes.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society’s work, however, goes beyond fish hatcheries and stocking programs. We’re also assisting with the recovery of endangered white sturgeon on the Kootenay, Columbia and Nechacko rivers. And all around the province, with help from partners such as the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation and Columbia Basin Trust, we’re making it easier and more enjoyable for people to go fishing.

One of our most successful programs is Learn to Fish – a two to four-hour introduction to respon- sible fishing – designed especially for youngsters. Close to 30,000 kids and their parents take part annually in the sessions held at our hatcheries and at parks and campgrounds.

Another popular initiative is our Rod Loan program. Lack of gear can be a real barrier for potential anglers, but thanks to support from our partners, the Society is able to provide more than 5,000 free starter sets every year.

With so many BC residents concentrated in urban and suburban areas, access to good fishing is a challenge. For that reason, the Society has pioneered Fishing in the City programs, in which we work with local municipalities to create well-stocked, easily accessible fishing waters close to (and in some cases within) BC’s major cities.

To find out more about programs in your region, to get the latest stocking reports, or to buy a fish- ing licence, visit the Society’s website at gofishbc.com. We also encourage you to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter, featuring tips from our angling advisor Brian Chan and other experts. You can follow us on Facebook or Twitter for even more current news.

We’d love to hear from you. For stocking updates, expert advice, or a fishing tip or two, come visit our staff - and our fish - at the show.
