DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

EXECUTIVE

Appreciation of Our Own Some weeks ago I had the privilege of welcoming participants of the National Truck Driving Championship (NTDC) to our great state. This was a breakfast meeting, which required me to be up and about quite early in the morning. I left my home before sunrise and fairly early in the commute from Pleasant Grove, I found myself marveling at the sun peaking over the Wasatch Mountains. It was a beautiful morning and I felt a deep sense of gratitude to be living in such a majestic and scenic area. I was also quite happy about not having to deal with the typical commute traffic.

Because it was such a pretty day and my mind was in final preparation mode for addressing the NTDC audience, I was very aware of my surroundings. I noticed how clean and picturesque Salt Lake City was. While in this state, I turned north on West Temple and realized that the NTDC competitors and supporters were filing out of hotels lining both sides of the road. They were dressed in their respective company uniforms. They were, in many cases, surrounded by spouses, children or other family-like enthusiasts. It was a wonderful sight! I found myself hoping that state, city and county officials would see and recognize this wonderful image of the trucking industry and that our fellow citizens would appreciate what this group of dedicated drivers/companies meant to their every day lives.

Just last month we celebrated National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. The Utah Trucking Association (UTA) for years has strived to honor this week in meaningful ways. While delivering goodies to drivers at the Echo Port of Entry our representatives ran across a driver, who based on his girlfriend’s email message, was quite surprised and appreciative of our expressions of gratitude. She wrote; “My boyfriend who drives for … out of Missouri just came through the port of entry out of Coalville, Utah. He came in out of Wyoming. He was truly touched by the entry welcome he received. These people took out their time to welcome and thank the truck drivers of America. The donut, pen, paper, just the thought of them standing there to say “Thank You” was just awesome. We know the gentleman standing there handing out a great welcome also have a hard job, but my boyfriend has driven for 30 years and has never seen anything like this. Thank you so much!”

It is sad that this particular driver has felt less than appreciated during his 30 years of service. I am, however, grateful for the efforts that our team, members and partners make to appreciate drivers and recognize them as the life-blood of the industry. During Truck Driver Appreciation week, the UTA supported activities at the Echo, Wendover, Perry and St. George ports of entry. Thousands of bottles of water, doughnuts, bananas, apples, peanuts, popcorn and trinkets were hand distributed. Most important, thousands of drivers received a personal “thank you”. Nearly every one of the UTA members and company owners that I visited with during this celebration talked about cooking hot dogs or burgers for their own company drivers.

The UTA culminated the week’s activities with a terrific Safety Awards Banquet where we were able to recognize and present 24 Drivers of the Month, numerous truck driving champions, a Safety Supervisor of the Year, a Trooper of the Year, a UDOT, Motor Carrier Division Industry Partner Award and an overall Driver of the Year. All of these recipients demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, knowledge, skills and abilities and are exemplary representatives of the association and trucking industry as a whole.

I appreciate the atmosphere of gratitude, service and humanity demonstrated by our membership. This environment makes it fun to come to work every day and makes it easy to represent the trucking industry, especially our member organizations.
