Truckers Make Our World Complete
What a busy time the Utah Trucking Association has been having. The Utah Truck Driving Championship and the Annual ATV ride were in June. In August the National Truck Driving Championship was held with over 500 participants plus family and friends at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. After that event, the UTA held their annual Truck PAC Golf fundraiser at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in Orem. In September, we hosted the Annual Safety Awards Banquet at the Little America Hotel, the Annual Road Rally ride and topped it off with National Driver Appreciation Week.
What makes a person stand out, what makes a group of people stand out, what makes a company stand out? Does it matter for instance in the transportation industry to be an individual or team player. As single driver should they care about, themselves, a fellow driver, the company or all of the above?

How do you create a culture at home, at work, or your favorite hobby of camaraderie and team work? I have a daughter who played one year of college soccer out of state. She stopped playing for two years and transferred this summer to a college in Utah. If she wants to play she has to prove herself to the coach and the team. She had to get back into playing shape; she had to gain the team trust through hard work, being honest and doing what you say you are going to do with integrity. She led by example and won a starting position and has become one of the captains. She had to overcome a lot of obstacles.
If you take a single pencil and hold each end you can snap it in half. Now take five pencils and hold them together can you snap them in half? Probably, but they are stronger than the single pencil. Now take ten pencils and put them together and try to break them in half; some of you could but it will be more difficult or you cannot break them at all.
The camaraderie that I saw at the National Truck Driving Championships was very impressive even though these are individual awards.

The Driver of the Year, Carl Talbot, won because he had driven millions of miles safe and he was selfless in helping his fellow men many times during his driving career. The Safety Supervisor of the Year, Sherrill Hansen, I am sure put in a lot of hours to help her company become the best that they could become. The Trooper of the Year, Randy Allred, and the UDOT Motor Carrier Division Partner of the Year, Dale Shultz, worked tirelessly improving systems and finding a better way.
Does a single driver doing his or her job make a difference? Sure they get paid to do their job but the folks who go the extra mile in safety, customer service and just doing the little things are what make our industry so great and I have seen this time and time again of people I have never met but because I am a trucker you belong and watch out for each other.
Let’s Keep on Trucking.
