Jan Nelson’s sailing pictures capture the tremendous movement, thrills and glorious col- ours of sailing, both in a scenic and racing sense. Although the majority of her work relates to the sea, Jan is also an accomplished landscape painter, where a passion for nature comes to the fore. She concentrates on acrylics but paints equally well in watercolour and oils depending on the subject matter. She makes extensive use of impasto techniques – laying the paint on thickly – where the paint itself, in its refl ection of light and the speed and strength of its application, echoes the subject matter.

John Slavin is an Edinburgh-based artist who specialises in painting dis- tinctively rocky landscapes, especially the Pyrenees.
