art. He is the creator of the Heavy Horse, the famous sculpture of a Clydesdale that stands by the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edin- burgh. ‘I have only been on a horse once in my life,’ explains Scott, who grew up in inner-city Glasgow, ‘although I am very much drawn to them as an aesthetic pursuit.’ The sculptor studied his craft for fi ve years at
Glasgow School of Art before turning his hand to the business of public art. He now works hand-in-hand with architects and structural engineers who deal with the technical calcula-
tions to ensure that they maintain the beauty and rigour of Scott’s designs while ensuring that the framework and foundations will with- stand the elements. Aside from horses, Scott’s creations include
Aria, the mermaid at Cumbernauld, a 65ft female fi gure on the River Lagan in Belfast and a series of 15 sculptures across various states in Australia. He is currently learning about the fi ner points of Fresian horse anatomy for a 60ft sculp- ture in Freesland and working on a memorial to the steelworkers of Ravenscraig. www.scottsculptures.co.uk
