What exactly is a SMART goal? It’s an acronym for all the necessary parts of a balanced fitness plan that ensures success:

SPECIFIC:Be precise with what you want to achieve. Goals need to be specific and written down. MEASURABLE:Define the means by which you track progress; i.e. how often you will exercise per week. ATTAINABLE:Set goals that are challenging, but can honestly be attained. REALISTIC:Make sure goals are realistic and make good sense. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment! TIME:Set a deadline for the completion of your goal. A deadline keeps you motivated!
Goals that are written using the SMART format
clearly define what you are going to do, hold you accountable and ensure achievement. Here is an example of a short-term SMART goal
that one of my clients and I created after a thorough lifestyle evaluation. “I will consistently exercise three times per week for 1 hour each session for the next three months for a total of 36 workouts. Each workout will include three sets of six to eight specific exercises.” I assist clients to define the exact exercises to be
performed based on their ability and desired results. Eventually becoming more specific, with set goals, defined dates and times of the workouts. It is also important to incorporate short-term goals after you have written and defined the long-term fitness and lifestyle objectives. Things like; “I will lose 15 pounds by June 1, 2014 by exercising consistently, eating healthy foods and going to bed earlier five nights per week.” Breaking long-term goals into smaller attainable

tine and then second, actually stick to it. Before starting any fitness program, it is important to have a full assessment of where you currently are and
then to define where you actually want to be. If you want to lose ten pounds but don’t have a clear path to get there, you will struggle over and over with a negative cycle of weight loss and weight gain. If you have a clear picture of where you are currently and a long-range vision of where you want to be, you can create a plan of smaller, short-term goals which are attainable and continuously move you toward your desired long-term objective. Goals not only provide you with motivation, they act as great benchmarks on the path toward reach- ing your ultimate target. It is important however, that your goals be well-thought, well-written and make good common sense. I recommend always writing SMART goals for fitness plans. These can be written for both short and long
term
