WITH THE SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S CHORUS by lisa lipsey

IN THE HUSTLE and bustle of the holiday season, take a few moments to slow down and experience some simple joys—like music—things that make the day “merry and bright.” That’s the idea behind the San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC), a non-profit, non-audition chorus that welcomes all women to sing (as long as they can match pitch with the piano). Founded in 1987, SDWC has unheld a mission:

To use the power of women and the power of music to entertain and inspire audiences; as well positively change the world we live in. Its members are feminist-spirited people, with a strong sense of social conscience who work to entertain and educate the LGBT and San Diego community at large. Their music speaks to issues as diverse as human rights, love, world peace, religious freedom, environmental harmony, inclusion and cultural diversity. SDWC supports and affirms the music of women, as well as lesbian and gay composers and arrangers. Light Up the World marks SDWC’s 26th annual

winter concert and this year it is focusing on all the wonderful things about the winter holiday season: “This concert is about family, togetherness, love, warmth, hope and all the winter goodwill that lights up the world during this time of year,” said board member Carin Scheinin. The almost 90 member SDWC will perform uplift-

ing songs about Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, Winter Solstice and other joyous music from around the globe. Scheinin invites audiences to “…delight in fa- miliar holiday tunes like the Hanukah classic ‘S’vivon,’ the jazz version of ‘Carol of the Bells,’ ‘Grown Up Christmas List,’ the reflective song ‘Believe’ from the movie The Polar Express, the haunting call for peace

growth spurt and recently appointed Kathleen Hansen as the chorus’ first-ever assistant artistic director. “After an extensive search process, SDWC’s board of directors extended the offer to Hansen, who started in the position October 19. Karen will work closely alongside longtime SDWC Artistic Director Christopher Allen to provide assistance and support to SDWC’s growing membership.

“SDWC has grown threefold over the last few

years and having an assistant director will allow us to meet the needs of our membership by providing additional artistic support, facilitating more produc- tive rehearsals and creating additional opportunities to share our music within the San Diego community. Kathleen’s exemplary artistry, enthusiasm and col- laborative spirit, as well as her extensive work with choral ensembles and singers of all talent levels, is a wonderful fit for our organization,” said Scheinin. Hansen, who operates Serenity Sound Healing,

brings a great deal of experience to this new position, which Scheinin was pleased to share, “Ms. Hansen holds a Bachelor of Music degree specializing in music education and trumpet and a Master of Music degree specializing in conducting. She has con-
