Pulp Paper & Logistics

Pulper detrashing from Voith proves a success in many stock preparation lines

poses the greatest challenge to pulper detrashing machines, but IntensaMaXX is said by Voith to easily manage the process. Operating reliably at the highest

D

concentrations, the system has been used on more than 30 stock preparation lines worldwide. “In May 2013 we put the

first IntensaMaXX detrashing machine into operation,” says Dr. Marietta Jass-Teichmann, chief executive of Papierfabrik

isposal of the various contaminants contained in recovered paper

Adolf Jass in Fulda, Germany. “Since then it has been running to our complete satisfaction. The capacity is extraordinarily good. For that reason we have also been using a second IntensaMaXX for disposal since the beginning of August.” An eccentric and asymmetrical enclosure prevents spinning and every type of tail formation so that even a very high contaminant content does not cause problems during operation. As the contaminant discharge is oriented downward it facilitates reliable removal of heavy

Polyurethane roll covers improve tissue quality

A range of polyurethane roll covers for tissue machine press and suction press rolls has been launched by Metso. The new PressHusky and VacuHusky roll covers are designed specifically for Yankee press applications widely used in dry crepe tissue production, with as an option the iRoll online nip profile measuring system. Some tissue grades are sensitive

to bulkiness and thickness so lower nip pressures are preferred in pressing. Traditionally, this has been a limitation in the use of polyurethane roll covers in Yankee press applications. The polyurethane material offers

a range of hardness alternatives and more options for cover topography, which results in maximised dewatering and the desired tissue quality with high bulkiness and thickness. Operating costs are lowered with PressHusky and VacuHusky

covers due to the reduced need for regrinding. Their low rolling resistance reduces energy consumption while the solid press rolls with a PressHusky cover can be operated more cost-efficiently without internal water cooling. Nip profile monitoring and control has been a challenge in a nip formed between a roll and a Yankee dryer. Reliable information on nip profile errors or skewness problems can only be gained when measurements are taken at operating speed with the desired steam pressure inside the Yankee dryer. Metso’s iRoll measurement technology can be used with these new polyurethane roll covers, providing accurate nip pressure profile data for efficient nip control. Modernisation of S5 controls helped by Voith

Supplies of the S5 series of Siemens process logic controllers used for automation in paper machines will no longer be available after 2015. Paper manufacturers will need to replace them in the medium to long term and are expected to choose the substantially faster S7 controls. Voith Paper’s OnC StepCore57 is designed to reuse most parts of the existing hardware and facilitate the gradual migration of existing CPU components. Unlike other options on the

market, OnC StepCore57 enables the continued use of hardware components such as I/O cards and PCs or user software. When installing OnC StepCore57, a new plug-in card is all that is required, says Voith. Existing components can thus be retained and production stoppages due to long rebuilds can be prevented, ensuring system availability.

Voith says that it would be clearly

more expensive and difficult to replace some sensors and the entire central control unit with I/O hardware. As the migration of existing CPU components into new systems with the aid of OnC StepCore57 takes place gradually, the complete migration based on the kit principle can take place later. That makes investment projectable and manageable. Gradual system modernisation and expansion can be carried out during planned shutdowns. Integration into existing control systems of all Siemens generations can also take place in the process. StepCore57 is offered in three

packages, differing in scope of delivery and service: Basic, Comfort and Premium. These flexible packages can be customised to suit the individual requirements of the plant. More information from www. voith.com/paper.
